REFLECTION | Memorial of St. Boniface, Bishop and Martyr

“David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” - Saint Mark 12:37

Do we truly understand who Jesus is?

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks a question about the Messiah that makes people think. He shares how David, guided by the Holy Spirit, calls the Messiah “Lord.”

But if the Messiah is David’s descendant, how can He also be his Lord?

Jesus showed He is more than just a human descendant of David. As the Son of God, He came to save us and rule forever. This message delighted many people who heard Him.

We, like the people in Jesus’ time, sometimes fail to see how great Jesus is. The Jewish leaders wanted a political savior who would make their earthly kingdom strong again. But Jesus did not come to be an earthly king. He came to bring salvation and lead us to God’s kingdom.

His name, “Jesus,” means “God saves,” reminding us that He came to save us from sin and to guide us to God the Father. Knowing this, we are invited to follow Jesus not just as a teacher but as our Savior and Lord.

Today, we also honor St. Boniface, a Benedictine monk who spread the Gospel in Germany. He came from England to a land with many wars and conflicts. Through his preaching, he brought peace, built churches, and helped many people know God. Even when many groups tried to win his loyalty, St. Boniface stayed faithful to Jesus, the Church, and the pope. He worked hard as a missionary, even though it was dangerous, and was martyred for his faith.

St. Boniface teaches us how to stay loyal to Jesus no matter what challenges come our way. He showed courage and faith in spreading God’s word, and he inspires us to do the same.

Let us allow Jesus to guide our lives and follow His teachings every day. With simple acts of love and faith, we can help spread God’s kingdom, just as St. Boniface did.
