Missionaries of Charity | The Jharkhand High Court in India | Saint Teresa of Calcutta

The Jharkhand High Court in India has acquitted Sister Concilia of the Missionaries of Charity and two others, clearing them of all charges in the 2018 Ranchi child trafficking case
The verdict brings an end to nearly eight years of legal proceedings involving the congregation founded by Saint Teresa of Calcutta

The case began after allegations that a newborn infant had been illegally sold from a Missionaries of Charity shelter home in Ranchi. Sister Concilia was arrested amid widespread media attention and spent three years in prison before being granted bail. Following the ruling, Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Daltonganj, former secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, described the decision as a moment of vindication after years of suffering, prayer, and perseverance.

The allegations had a major impact on the congregation’s ministry, with authorities closing another Missionaries of Charity home and investigating several institutions across Jharkhand. Despite the challenges and public criticism, the sisters continued their mission of serving the poor, abandoned, and vulnerable. Church leaders welcomed the verdict, saying it restores confidence in the Missionaries of Charity’s decades-long commitment to compassionate service. The ruling marks a significant moment of relief for the congregation and those who stood by Sister Concilia throughout the difficult journey.
