The Vatican Publishing House (LEV) has released a new English edition of The Lord Holds Us by the Hand, a collection of previously unpublished homilies delivered by Pope Benedict XVI between 2005 and 2017.
Originally published in Italian as Il Signore ci tiene per mano, the volume gathers homilies preached during private Masses celebrated with members of the papal household and invited guests. The texts span the liturgical seasons of Advent, Lent, and Easter, covering both Benedict XVI’s pontificate and his years as Pope Emeritus at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in Vatican City.
The collection offers readers access to reflections that were largely unavailable to the public during Benedict’s lifetime. Delivered in intimate settings, the homilies showcase his distinctive approach to Sacred Scripture, combining theological depth with pastoral clarity and a Christ-centered spirituality.
The volume includes a preface by Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Benedict XVI’s longtime personal secretary, and an introduction by Fr. Federico Lombardi, president of the Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation.
According to the publisher, the book is the first installment in a broader project to publish Benedict XVI’s previously unpublished homilies. A second volume, focused on Ordinary Time, is expected to follow.
