Pope Leo XIV has opened the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals on Friday, June 26. An opportunity for the Cardinals to discern together with the Pope, the Consistory is being held in the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican and will conclude on Saturday evening. Speaking to the Cardinals, Pope Leo reiterated his desire, which expressed in January, that such encounters may enable them to “work together in the service of the Church” and continue “a conversation that helps me in the service of the mission and of the whole Church.” Reminding the Cardinals to build communion in the Church through synodality, the Pope exhorted them to take his encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ as a key to understanding their own local Churches. Highlighting the fundamental question, “How can we help our Churches today to proclaim the Gospel with greater fidelity, freedom, and credibility?”, the Holy Father stated that Mission is the very reason for the Church’s existence and not one among many tasks.
