Our Lady of Perpetual Help | Blessed Virgin Mary

The Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is one of the most beloved Marian images in the Catholic Church. Rich in symbolism, it invites us to contemplate the mystery of Christ's Redemption and the tender, unwavering care of the Blessed Virgin Mary for all her children.

Dating back to the Byzantine tradition between the 13th and 15th centuries, this sacred icon—also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour—has inspired countless believers through the centuries. Revered by generations of the faithful and honored by several Popes, it has become associated with many remarkable favors, healings, and answered prayers.

Painted on wood, the icon portrays the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. Mary's gaze is directed toward us, gently inviting every believer to place complete trust in her maternal care, while the Child Jesus looks toward the instruments of His future Passion.

In the upper corners, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present the instruments of Christ's suffering. St. Michael holds the spear, the sponge soaked in vinegar, and the crown of thorns, while St. Gabriel carries the Cross and the nails. These symbols remind us that Jesus willingly embraced His Passion out of love for the salvation of the world.

Seeing this vision of His future suffering, the Child Jesus clings to His Mother's hand. One of His sandals has slipped from His foot, expressing the urgency with which He seeks the comfort of His Mother. This touching detail reveals both His true humanity and His childlike trust in Mary.

Yet the icon is not centered on suffering alone. Its radiant golden background proclaims Christ's ultimate victory over sin and death through His Resurrection. The crowns adorning Jesus and Mary speak of Christ's eternal kingship and Mary's unique place beside Him as the Queen Mother, sharing in His triumph.

Mary's hands beautifully reveal her mission. She lovingly embraces her Son while at the same time presenting Him to the world. In this simple gesture, the icon proclaims the mystery of the Incarnation: Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, the Savior whom Mary continually leads us to encounter.

The icon speaks powerfully to every Christian heart. Just as the Child Jesus sought refuge in His Mother's embrace, we too are invited to turn to Mary with complete confidence in every trial, sorrow, and uncertainty.

Our Blessed Mother never keeps us for herself. She always leads us to Jesus. As the Mother of God and our spiritual Mother, she intercedes for us, comforts us in our struggles, strengthens our faith, and gently points us toward her Son, the source of every grace.

The star upon Mary's veil is a reminder of her unique role in God's plan of salvation. She is the Star who guides us safely to Christ, helping us remain faithful even amid life's darkest moments.

Today, the original Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is enshrined in the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome. Entrusted to the Redemptorists, its message continues to echo throughout the world: no one who seeks the loving intercession of Mary is ever left without hope.

Whenever we stand before this sacred icon, we are reminded that, whatever crosses we carry, we never walk alone. Our Lady of Perpetual Help lovingly accompanies us, leading us always to Jesus, our Redeemer and our everlasting hope.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, pray for us.
