Yosef hidup antara tahun 816-886.
Ia mengungsi ketika daerahnya digempur oleh orang Islam. Ia kemudian ditangkap
oleh bajak laut dan dijual sebagai budak belian. Setelah ditebus ia mengikuti
temannya, uskup Ignasios dari Konstantinopel, ke dalam pembuangan. Di
pengasingan itulah ia menyusun kidung-kidung gerejani yang indah sekali,
sehingga ia dijuluki "Yosef Hymnograph".
