Saint Irenaeus of Lyons was born around A.D. 130 in Asia Minor and was a disciple of Polycarp, who had been taught by the Apostle John the Apostle. This direct connection to the Apostles shaped his lifelong commitment to preserving the true Christian faith. He later became Bishop of Lyons in Gaul (modern-day France), where he courageously shepherded the Church during a time of persecution and doctrinal confusion.
One of his most beloved teachings is: "The glory of God is man fully alive, and the life of man is the vision of God." He proclaimed that Christ became man to restore humanity and bring us into communion with God.
Known for his wisdom, charity, and love for unity, St. Irenaeus sought peace within the Church while remaining steadfast in the truth. In 2022, Pope Francis proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, giving him the title Doctor of Unity in recognition of his witness to truth and reconciliation.
St. Irenaeus of Lyons, defender of the Apostolic faith, obtain for us the grace to remain faithful to Christ and His Church, to grow in holiness through our daily lives, and to seek unity in truth and charity. Amen.
