During Sunday Angelus, Pope Leo XIV expressed his closeness to the victims of the massive Venezuela earthquake and called for prayers for the people of Venezuela. Over 1450 people have reportedly been killed in the two massive, back-to-back earthquakes that hit the South American country. The Pope invited everyone to keep praying for Venezuela, which is going through hard times, as well as for those who are engaged in rescue operations. “I wish to express my closeness to the Venezuelan sisters and brothers affected by the recent earthquakes that have caused numerous victims and injured, as well as great material damages,” the pope said in his message rendered in Spanish. While praying for the repose of the deceased, the pope also renewed his “spiritual closeness to their families, the injured, and those struck by this tragedy.” He also thanked those who are selflessly carrying out search and rescue efforts. Pope Leo, who had been presiding over the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals, concluded the consistory on Saturday. The earthquakes, with 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude, struck the country last Wednesday. Pope Leo XIV right away sent an initial donation of 100,000 euros to assist victims and their families. Meanwhile, Catholic communities and charities in Venezuela have volunteered into rescue and support operations in the country and have opened parish buildings to shelter displaced families.
