The Catholic Church in Vietnam is preparing for a historic celebration, as more than 70,000 faithful are expected to gather for the beatification of Father Francis Xavier Truong Buu Diep, a priest remembered for his courage, compassion, and sacrifice. The beatification ceremony will take place on July 2 at the Tac Say Pilgrimage Center in southern Vietnam, in the Diocese of Can Tho. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, will preside over the ceremony as a special envoy of Pope Leo. Born in 1897, Father Diep was ordained a priest in 1924 and dedicated his ministry to rural communities in Vietnam and Cambodia, especially serving the poor and vulnerable. During the First Indochina War, as violence spread throughout the region, Father Diep refused to abandon his parishioners despite repeated warnings. He was captured, tortured, and killed on March 12, 1946. His body was later discovered in a pond. The diocese has prepared a five-hectare celebration ground to welcome thousands of pilgrims. A new official portrait and statue of Father Diep, based on historical records, have also been unveiled, symbolizing his deep faith and martyrdom. His story has touched people beyond religious boundaries. Even non-Christians have expressed admiration for a priest remembered as “a compassionate father” who gave his life for others. The beatification marks a significant moment for the Church in Vietnam, honoring a life of faith, service, and selfless love.
