Having expressed his solidarity at the closing of the extraordinary Consistory, Leo XIV returned to address an appeal to Venezuela at the Angelus finale this Sunday. In Spanish, the Pontiff remembered the victims of the strong earthquakes that struck the country last Wednesday and renewed his spiritual closeness to those affected by the tragedy.
“I would like to express my solidarity to the Venezuelan sisters and brothers affected by the recent earthquakes, which caused numerous casualties and injuries, in addition to enormous material damage,” the Pope stated. Leo XIV assured his prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased, expressed closeness to the families of the victims and the wounded, and thanked all those who work generously in search and assistance operations.
The earthquake, which struck central and northeastern Venezuela with magnitude of 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, left a scene of devastation. According to the latest official data, at least 1,400 people have died, over 3,000 were injured, and about 50,000 are still missing. Authorities warn the numbers are still provisional and could increase as rescue work progresses.
The most affected areas are mainly concentrated in the state of La Guaira, close to the capital Caracas, where residential buildings, hotels, commercial establishments and other infrastructures have suffered severe damage or completely collapsed. Thousands remain in open areas for fear of new tremors, while hospitals, power grids and water systems face serious difficulties.
