Alexander and Shanie MacDonald | A story about their baby Gabriel Michael

This is such a beautiful story! Please pray for this family!

The Little Rose Shop, a Catholic store that sells products for families and children, posted a precious, tear-jerking story about a family that bought one of their infant swaddles.

Alexander and Shanie MacDonald shared a story about their baby, Gabriel Michael, who recently passed away just seven hours and 38 minutes after birth. Gabriel was born with Trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, “a rare genetic condition when an extra copy of chromosome 13 attaches to a pair of chromosomes.”

The condition typically results in miscarriage or the infant passing away before the age of one.

The MacDonalds explained “how deeply meaningful” a swaddle dedicated to the Holy Family was to them. They said Gabriel Michael passed away as they put him in the swaddle, and it was “the most peaceful and beautiful moment of their lives.”

Shanie also shared that the garment was “more than a swaddle” to them– “It felt so deeply symbolic—like my husband and I were gently handing our son over to the Holy Family to love, protect, and watch over him when we no longer could.”

She concluded that the swaddle “became a final act of love, faith, and trust. It gave us comfort during the most heartbreaking goodbye, and it will forever be tied to the memory of our son’s passing in the most sacred way.”

ChurchPOP reached out to Gabriel's mother, Shanie, who shared this additional soul-stirring testimony about their baby:

"Gabriel was baptized by my husband immediately after birth. Our entire pregnancy and Gabriel’s short life were deeply rooted in faith, and we truly witnessed God working in so many profound and divine ways through his story.

"Through Gabriel, I’ve also connected with another mama whose son was born on October 24, 2025, also with Trisomy 13, and his name was also Gabriel. Moments like that have continually reminded us that God is so present and intentional, even in the hardest seasons.

"I was also recently struck by a ChurchPOP post about Father James Blount, who spoke at the Divine Mercy National Conference in Dublin, and shared how God chooses the day we are born for a reason and how the names our parents give us carry great spiritual significance.

"Our Gabriel was born on January 10, the feast day of Saint Peter Orseolo, a saint known for his holy sense of urgency in answering God’s call, something that feels so fitting for our little Gabriel, who so quickly answered God’s call to a life in heaven."
