Hymn

The Father’s glory, Christ our light,
With love and mercy comes to span
The vast abyss of sin between
The God of holiness and man.
Christ yesterday and Christ today
For all eternity the same,
The image of our hidden God;
Eternal Wisdom is his name.
He keeps his word from age to age,
Is with us to the end of days,
A cloud by day, a flame by night,
To go before us on his ways.
We bless you, Father, fount of light,
And Christ, your well-beloved Son,
Who with the Spirit dwell in us:
Immortal Trinity in One.
  • First Reading: Amos 7:10-17

    Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

    (Reader) A reading from the Book of the Prophet Amos.

    Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam,
       king of Israel:
       “Amos has conspired against you here within Israel;
       the country cannot endure all his words.
    For this is what Amos says:
       Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
       and Israel shall surely be exiled from its land.”

    To Amos, Amaziah said:
       “Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah!
    There earn your bread by prophesying,
       but never again prophesy in Bethel;
       for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.”
    Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet,
       nor have I belonged to a company of prophets;
       I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores.
    The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me,
       ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’
    Now hear the word of the LORD!”

       You say: prophesy not against Israel,
          preach not against the house of Isaac.
             Now thus says the LORD:
       Your wife shall be made a harlot in the city,
          and your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword;
       Your land shall be divided by measuring line,
          and you yourself shall die in an unclean land;
             Israel shall be exiled far from its land.

(Reader) The Word of the Lord.

(All) Thanks be to God.

  • Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 11

    . (10cd) The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.

    The law of the LORD is perfect,
       refreshing the soul;
    The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,
       giving wisdom to the simple.

    . The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.

    The precepts of the LORD are right,
       rejoicing the heart;
    The command of the LORD is clear,
       enlightening the eye.

    . The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.

    The fear of the LORD is pure,
       enduring forever;
    The ordinances of the LORD are true,
       all of them just.

    . The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.

    They are more precious than gold,
       than a heap of purest gold;
    Sweeter also than syrup
       or honey from the comb.

    . The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.

Gospel acclamation: Alleluia: 2 Corinthians 5:19

. Alleluia, alleluia.

God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Matthew 9:1-8

They glorified God who had given such authority to men.

 (Reader) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

 (All) Glory to you, O Lord.

After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
   “Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
   “This man is blaspheming.”
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
   “Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
   or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
   has authority on earth to forgive sins”—
   he then said to the paralytic,
   “Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
   and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

(Reader) The Gospel of the Lord.

(All) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

For our reflection today:

This devotional material is suitable for all levels of society, especially for personal, family and community use. Every group and community as well as the Congregation in the Jesus, Mary, Joseph Ministry of Love (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels) are encouraged to use it freely.

The words of the Popes.

    The paralyzed man is the image of every human being whom sin prevents from moving about freely, from walking on the path of good and from giving the best of himself. Indeed, by taking root in the soul, evil binds the person with the ties of falsehood, anger, envy and other sins and gradually paralyzes him. Jesus, therefore, scandalizing the scribes who were present, first said:  "... your sins are forgiven". Only later, to demonstrate the authority to forgive sins that God had conferred upon him, did he add:  "Stand up! Pick up your mat and go home", and heals the man completely.

    The message is clear: human beings, paralyzed by sin, need God's mercy which Christ came to give to them so that, their hearts healed, their whole life might flourish anew. Today too, humanity is marked by sin which prevents it from rapidly progressing in those values of brotherhood, justice and peace that with solemn declarations it had resolved to practise. Why? What is blocking it? What is paralyzing this integral development? We know well that there are many historical reasons for this and that the problem is complex. But the Word of God invites us to have a gaze of faith and to trust, like the people who were carrying the paralytic, that Jesus alone is capable of true healing. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 19 February 2006)

Hymn

When God had filled the earth with life
And blessed it, to increase,
Then cattle dwelt with creeping things,
And lion with lamb, at peace.
He gave them vast, untrodden lands,
With plants to be their food;
Then God saw all that he had made
And found it very good.
Praise God the Father of all life,
His Son and Spirit blest,
By whom creation lives and moves,
In whom it comes to rest.

Help men to create a community where justice and peace may flourish:

  be with us lest we labour in vain.

The First Holy Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church

These “proto-martyrs” of Rome were the first Christians persecuted en masse by the Emperor Nero in the year 64, before the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul.

Nero was widely believed to have caused the fire that burned down much of Rome in the same year.  He blamed the fire on the Christians and put them to death, many by crucifixion, being feeding to the wild animals in his circus, or by being tied to posts and lit up as human torches.

Today, the site of Nero's Circus, also the location of St. Peter's martyrdom, is marked by the Piazza dei Protomartiri Romani (Square of the Roman Protomartyrs) in the Vatican next to St. Peter's basilica.

These martyrs were called the “Disciples of the Apostles” and their firmness in the face of their gruesome deaths were a powerful testimony that led to many conversions in the early Roman Church.

East African nation | Acts of violence | Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB)

As Kenya prepares for the August 2027 general elections,  a Catholic Bishop in the country has decried what he described as a growing phenomenon of “goonism” in the East African nation.

In his remarks during the Family Day and 20th Anniversary of Sts. Peter and Paul Kikuyu Parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi (ADN) on June 28, Bishop Obed Muriungi Karobia said acts of violence by goons are instilling fear among citizens and contradicting both Christian values and basic human dignity.

"There is a phenomenon arising in this country. Some of you have been victims of what is called goonism," the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi (ADN) said, echoing concerns that members of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) raised in their June 23 statement on the state of the East African nation.

The Auxiliary Bishop of the ADN likened goonism to terrorism, saying, “Goons are like terrorists because they can invade places, attack people, and leave them living in fear and terror. After all, who are terrorists? They are people who spread terror.”

Addressing not only political leaders but all Kenyans, the member of the Conventual Franciscan Friars (OFM Conv.), who was Consecrated Bishop on May 6, urged citizens not to allow themselves to be manipulated into engaging in violence for financial gain.

"I am not speaking only to political leaders but to all of you. Do not allow yourselves to be used," Bishop Karobia said, lamenting that some individuals accept small payments to commit acts that result in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property.

He said, "You are paid a small amount of money, you end up causing people to suffer, spilling blood, leading to the deaths of others, and destroying people's property, is that truly Christianity?"

The 47-year-old Kenyan-born Catholic Church leader emphasized that actions by goons are not only contrary to the Christian faith but also violate the principles of humanity, stating, “Besides not being Christian, it is not even humane."

Month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus | Pope Pius IX | Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ in 1849

The Catholic Church traditionally dedicates the month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus.
This devotion has been recognized for centuries, dating back to Christ’s death on the Cross. Many saints were devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus, particularly Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi, and Saint Gaspar del Bufalo.

Saint Gaspar del Bufalo, founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, and promoter of the devotion, said,

“We must let it be known how the Blood of Christ cleanses the souls and sanctifies them, particularly by means of the sacraments.”

Pope Pius IX officially instituted a feast dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ in 1849.

Pope Pius X later assigned July 1 as the designated feast. However, after Vatican II, the Catholic Church traditionally dedicated the entire month of July to the Precious Blood.

Many graces can be obtained from this devotion, including spiritual protection, healing, deliverance from evil, growth in virtue, and a deeper understanding of God's mercy and love.

Since July is dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus, here are eight short but powerful prayers you can recite for daily spiritual protection:

Catholics ring bells at Mass

Why do Catholics ring bells at Mass?

Here's the whole thing explained:

In the Middle Ages, churches had many side altars. You can still see the many side chapels when you visit a medieval cathedral in Europe.

Often, the side chapels were added to a church or cathedral by a wealthy benefactor who left an endowment (a parcel of land from which there would be a revenue stream).

The endowment paid for a priest's stipend to say Mass in that chapel every day for the repose of the soul of the donor and his family members.

As a result, Masses were said every day at all the side chapels and altars. In the monasteries, all the monk-priests celebrated their own Mass for designated intentions. The stipends paid by the donors supported the priest or monk.

These priests were called "chantry priests," and in addition to their duty of saying Mass in their chapel, they often had pastoral duties.

The chantry chapel in one of the old Anglican churches where I served, for example, doubled as a school room, and the chantry priest was the schoolmaster.

Anyway...if you went into a medieval church, abbey, or cathedral at any point in the day, Mass would be happening.

In fact, many masses took place at the same time. The church was open, and instead of the faithful going to Mass at a set time to intentionally attend Mass and receive communion, the faithful simply dropped into the church to pray, worship, and spend time with the Lord.

Most people rarely received communion--and if so, only once a year at Easter.

So if they were in the church praying, or even in the church meeting with neighbors for gossip, their attention was given when the bell was rung.

Imagine you are in one of those churches at that time. It's been a busy day for you in the fields. You drop into the church to say your prayers, and while kneeling at the far end, behind the rood screen, a bell rings, and you know the Lord is present.

So you turn your attention to Him in praise and worship. That's why the bells were rung, and if you visit a medieval cathedral today - busy with noisy tourists - you can see why the bell was necessary to quiet people down and turn them to prayer.

The tradition has carried on, and although our circumstances are different, the bell still rings to gather us back and give us focus.
