The Pope has made a final appeal to the Society of Saint Pius X, commonly known as SSPX. The society plans to consecrate bishops without the approval of the Holy Father. Pope Leo XIV sent a letter to the society's superior general, saying in part:
“I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: Please turn back! I urge you to consider carefully the spiritual good of the faithful, because the schismatic act you are about to undertake would deprive them of the licit and, in some cases, even valid reception of the sacraments, which they love and seek for their sanctification.”
The superior general of the SSPX later replied to the pope. He thanked the Supreme Pontiff for his fatherly concern but insisted the planned consecration would not constitute an act of schism.
