The Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office) | Doa Brevir Gereja Katolik

The Liturgy of the Hours (also known as the Divine Office) is the official daily prayer of the Roman Catholic Church. It sanctifies the entire day through prayer, scripture, and psalms, evolving directly from the Vatican's mandate to make the Church's ancient prayer accessible to all believers.

The Vatican II Reform

Historically tied to monasteries and clergy, the Divine Office was simplified and restructured during the Second Vatican Council. The Council directed that the prayers be adapted to modern life and encouraged the laity to actively participate.

The Five Canonical Hours

The daily prayer is structured into five distinct parts:

Office of Readings: A longer reflection featuring scripture and writings from the Church Fathers.

Morning Prayer (Lauds): Praising God at the start of the day.

Daytime Prayer: Can be prayed mid-morning, midday, or mid-afternoon.

In the traditional Latin breviary and modern Liturgy of the Hours, "Daytime Prayer" (also known as Ora Media) is a general term that includes three specific short hours. They are named based on the traditional Roman time of day:

Terce (Mid-morning Prayer) - Literally meaning the "third hour" (approx. 9:00 AM).

Sext (Midday Prayer) - Literally meaning the "sixth hour" (approx. 12:00 PM).

None (Mid-afternoon Prayer) - Literally meaning the "ninth hour" (approx. 3:00 PM).

Evening Prayer (Vespers): Thanksgiving at the close of day.

Night Prayer (Compline): A brief, reflective prayer just before bed.
