Pope Leo XIV appoints Sister Alessandra Smerilli as the new prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
A Salesian nun, economist, and former secretary of the same Dicastery, Sister Smerilli succeeds Cardinal Michael Czerny and becomes the third female prefect in the history of the Roman Curia.
The appointment confirms the Pope's desire to continue the path of promoting women in positions of leadership in the Church, continuing the work already initiated by Pope Francis.
Alongside her, Cardinal Fabio Baggio has been appointed pro-prefect, with special responsibility for the Laudato si' Center for Advanced Formation. The new secretary of the Dicastery will be Monsignor Jozef Barlaš.
The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development addresses some of the great challenges of our time: the poor, migrants, social justice, the environment, humanitarian aid, peace, disarmament, healthcare, and, increasingly, artificial intelligence. The new appointments will take effect on September 1, 2026.
