HYMN
Eternal Maker of the light,
True Light itself, surpassing day,
No gloom or darkness can you know,
In your own light which has no end.
Pale shades of night are yielding
fast,
Before the bold advance of day;
Resplendent shines the morning star
While other constellations fade.
We gladly rise to sing your
praise,
And thank you with renewed delight,
That rising sun brings back the day,
To conquer night's obscurity.
Most Holy One, we beg of you
Let not our souls be led astray,
By nature's pleasures and desires
Or by the world's deceiving glare.
Let no contention raise disputes,
Nor greed disgrace a Christian's name,
Nor greed for riches be a snare,
Nor evil thoughts corrupt our minds.
But let us show well-governed
souls,
Within a body chaste and pure,
To spend this day in work and prayer,
For Christ our Leader and our Lord.
O Father, this we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ your only Son,
Whom with the Spirit we adore:
One God who reigns for evermore. Amen.
First Reading: 1 Kgs 17:7-16
The jar of flour shall not go
empty, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.
(Reader) A reading from the first Book of
Kings.
The brook near where Elijah was hiding ran dry,
because no rain had fallen in the land.
So the LORD said to Elijah:
“Move on to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there.
I have designated a widow there to provide for you.”
He left and went to Zarephath.
As he arrived at the entrance of the city,
a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her,
“Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink.”
She left to get it, and he called out after her,
“Please bring along a bit of bread.”
She answered, “As the LORD, your God, lives,
I have nothing baked;
there is only a handful of flour in my jar
and a little oil in my jug.
Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks,
to go in and prepare something for myself and my son;
when we have eaten it, we shall die.”
Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid.
Go and do as you propose.
But first make me a little cake and bring it to me.
Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, says,
‘The jar of flour shall not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’”
She left and did as Elijah had said.
She was able to eat for a year, and Elijah and her son as well;
the jar of flour did not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.
When I call, answer me, O my just
God,
you who relieve me when I am in distress;
Have pity on me, and hear my prayer!
Men of rank, how long will you be dull of heart?
Why do you love what is vain and seek after falsehood?
℟. Lord,
let your face shine on us.
Know that the LORD does wonders for his faithful one;
the LORD will hear me when I call upon him.
Tremble, and sin not;
reflect, upon your beds, in silence.
℟. Lord,
let your face shine on us.
O LORD, let the light of your countenance shine upon us!
You put gladness into my heart,
more than when grain and wine abound.
℟. Lord,
let your face shine on us.
Gospel acclamation: Alleluia: Matthew 5: 16
R.
Alleluia, alleluia.
16 Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
R.
Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16
You are the light of the world.
✠ (Reader) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
(All) Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”
This devotional material is suitable for all levels of society, especially for personal, family and community use. Every group and community as well as the Congregation in the Jesus, Mary, Joseph Ministry of Love (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels) are encouraged to use it freely.
“You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:13-14). Indeed, it is genuine joy that gives flavor to life and brings to light something that was not there before. This joy springs from a way of life, a way of inhabiting the earth and of living together that must be desired and chosen. It is the life that shines in Jesus, the new flavor of his words and deeds. After encountering Jesus in his poverty of spirit, his meekness and simplicity of heart, his hunger and thirst for justice, which unlocks mercy and peace as powers of transformation and reconciliation, those who would distance themselves from all this seem bland and dull.
Indeed, it is painful to lose flavor and give up joy; yet it is possible to have this wound in one’s heart. Jesus seems to warn those who listen to him not to give up joy. Salt that has lost its flavor, he says, “is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot” (Mt 5:13). How many people — perhaps we ourselves — feel like they are worthless or broken. It is as if their light has been hidden. Jesus, however, proclaims a God who will never throw us away, a Father who cares for our names and our uniqueness. (Pope Leo XIV, Angelus, 8 February 2026)

INTERCESSIONS (Morning Prayer)
Let us bless our Savior who
enlightens the world by his resurrection. Let us humbly beg him:
Keep us, Lord, on your path.
Lord Jesus, we honor your
resurrection in our morning prayer,
— the hope of your glory enlightens our day.
Keep us, Lord, on your path.
Accept, Lord, our prayers and
petitions,
— as the firstfruits of our day.
Keep us, Lord, on your path.
Grant that we may progress today
in your love,
— and that all things may work together for our good and the good of all.
Keep us, Lord, on your path.
Make our light shine so brightly
before men,
— that seeing our good works they may give glory to the Father.
Keep us, Lord, on your path.
Additional prayers: After these prayers have been prayed, all of you may use prayers in your own words spontaneously and according to your individual circumstances and situations.
Our Father
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Concluding Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
true light of the world,
you guide all mankind to salvation.
Give us the courage, strength and grace
to build a world of justice and peace,
ready for the coming of that kingdom.
You live and reign for ever and ever.
Amen.

HYMN
Great Ruler of all space and
time,
You give us daylight to employ
In work for you, that with the night
Refreshing sleep we may enjoy.
While silence and darkness reign
Preserve our souls from sin and harm,
Let nothing evil venture near
To cause us panic or alarm.
And while we thus renew our
strength,
Untouched by taint of sinful fire
Let hearts and minds find rest in you,
The Source of every good desire.
O Father, this we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ your only Son,
Whom with the Spirit we adore
One God who reigns for evermore. Amen.
INTERCESSIONS (Evening Prayer)
Let us praise Christ, the
shepherd and guardian of our souls, who loves and protects his people. Placing
our hope in him, we cry out:
Protect your people, Lord.
Eternal shepherd, protect our
bishop,
— and all the shepherds of your Church.
Protect your people, Lord.
Look kindly on those who suffer
persecution,
— hasten to free them from all adversity.
Protect your people, Lord.
Have mercy on the needy, Lord,
— provide food for the hungry.
Protect your people, Lord.
Enlighten all legislators,
— to enact laws in the spirit of wisdom and justice.
Protect your people, Lord.
Come to the aid of our departed
brothers and sisters, whom you have redeemed with your blood,
— make them worthy to enter your wedding feast.
Protect your people, Lord.
