Saint Justin

St. Justin was born around 100 AD in Samaria to pagan parents. Despite receiving a solid education, he was dissatisfied with various pagan philosophies and their inability to provide truth about God. His life changed during a stroll by the seashore near Alexandria, Egypt, where he engaged in a transformative conversation with a wise Christian elder. This encounter sparked his interest in the Prophets, revealing to him that the human soul, bound by its own limitations, could not fully grasp the divine without spiritual wisdom. Witnessing the courage of Christian martyrs during persecutions further solidified his faith, leading to his conversion at the age of 30.

Living a rigorous and devout life, Justin traveled throughout Asia Minor in his philosopher's cloak, preaching about Christ after being ordained a Deacon. He wrote several treatises to counter the heretic Marcion, who was causing turmoil in the Church. Around 160 AD, he returned to Ephesus, where he had a two-day debate with Rabbi Tryphon, a prominent philosopher. Justin used the Prophets to demonstrate that the New Covenant would fulfill the Old Law, prompting Tryphon to acknowledge that the time for the Messiah's arrival had passed, although he insisted that Christ had yet to reveal himself.

Justin's second Apologia, written around 166 AD in response to the pagan philosopher Diognetus, is notable for its exploration of the relationship between faith and reality. Unfortunately, he was arrested for his writings and ultimately beheaded at the age of 67. St. Justin is recognized as the first great Christian apologist and the Patron of Catholic philosophy.

St. Justin, obtain for us the grace to become steadfast in the faith and guide us in spreading the gospel.
