Moral, Spiritual, and Human Wisdom Needed to Judge Good and Evil
Pope Leo XIV warned that artificial intelligence may imitate or simulate human understanding, but it does not possess the lived experience, conscience, body, or spiritual perspective that shape true human wisdom.
"Artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships," he wrote. He added that Al does not know from within what "love, work, friendship or responsibility" truly mean.
The pope said Al systems lack "a moral conscience" and cannot judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. He emphasized that human beings grow in wisdom through an "affective, relational, and spiritual perspective"
