HYMN

Christ Jesus, Lord, true Light of Light
Begotten Son of God most high,
You sent the Twelve afar to teach
And spread the faith throughout the world.

You gave them special gifts and grace,
And sent them out the world to win
To bring the gospel's truth to all,
Its seed to scatter far and wide.

Appeased by your apostles' prayer,
Be gracious to us Lord, we pray,
Smile down on us as we rejoice
To celebrate their feast today.

By their great merits keep us safe
From every snare of sin and death,
Since we preserve in faithful hearts
The holy teaching they proclaimed.

With face serene look down on us,
Correct us with your loving gaze,
That we may conquer by your grace
The evils that beset our way.

All glory be to you, O Lord,
Beyond the limits of all time,
Who by your true apostles' words,
Lead us, your children, safely home. Amen.

First Reading: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3

Barnabas was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith.

(Reader) A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

In those days a great number who believed turned to the Lord.
The news about them reached the ears of the Church in Jerusalem,
and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch.
When he arrived and saw the grace of God,
he rejoiced and encouraged them all
to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,
for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.
And a large number of people was added to the Lord.
Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch.
For a whole year they met with the Church
and taught a large number of people,
and it was in Antioch that the disciples
   were first called Christians.

Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers:
Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger,
   Lucius of Cyrene,
Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul
for the work to which I have called them.”
Then, completing their fasting and prayer,
they laid hands on them and sent them off.

(All) Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6; . 2b

. (2b) The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Sing to the LORD a new song,
   for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
   his holy arm.

. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
   toward the house of Israel.

. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

All the ends of the earth have seen
   the salvation of our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
   break into song: sing praise.

. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Sing praise to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and melodious song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
sing joyfully before the King, the LORD.

. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.

Gospel acclamation: Alleluia: Matthew 28:19a, 20b

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Go and teach all nations, says the Lord;
I am with you always, until the end of the world.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Matthew 10:7-13

Without cause you have received; without cost you are to give.

(Reader) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

(All) Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to the Twelve
“As you go, make this proclamation:
‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
no sack for the journey, or a second tunic,
   or sandals, or walking stick.
The laborer deserves his keep.
Whatever town or village you enter,
look for a worthy person in it,
and stay there until you leave.
As you enter a house, wish it peace.
If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it;
if not, let your peace return to you.”

(Reader) The Gospel of the Lord.

(All) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

For our reflection today:

This devotional material is suitable for all levels of society, especially for personal, family and community use. Every group and community as well as the Congregation in the Jesus, Mary, Joseph Ministry of Love (Blessed and Saints and the Nine Choirs of Angels) are encouraged to use it freely.

The words of the Popes.

“Preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand’” (Mt 10:7). It is the same proclamation with which Jesus began his preaching: the kingdom of God, that is, his lordship of love, has come near; it comes in our midst. And this is not just one piece of news among others, no, but the fundamental reality of life: the closeness of God, the closeness of Jesus.

Indeed, if the God of heaven is close, we are not alone on earth, and even in difficulty, we do not lose faith. Here is the first thing to say to people: God is not far away, but rather he is a Father. God is not distant, he is a Father, he knows you and he loves you; he wants to take you by the hand, even when you travel on steep and rugged paths, even when you fall and struggle to get up again and get back on track. He, the Lord, is there with you.

To proclaim that God is near — but how can we do this? In the Gospel, Jesus advises not to say many words, but rather to perform many deeds of love and hope in the name of the Lord. Not saying many words, but performing deeds! “Heal the sick”, says the Lord, “raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without pay, give without pay” (Mt 10:8). Here is the heart of proclamation: freely given witness, service. (Pope Francis, Angelus, 18 June 2023)

INTERCESSIONS (Morning Prayer)

Let us sing a fitting song of praise to our Savior, who destroyed the power of death and made clear the path to life and immortality through the Gospel, and let us petition him in humble supplication:
Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You gave wonderful guidance to your Church through her holy and distinguished teachers,
— may Christians rejoice always in the splendid legacy given to your Church.
Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

When their holy pastors prayed to you, as Moses had done, you forgave the sins of the people,
— through the intercession of these holy pastors continue to sanctify and purify your Church.
Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You anointed your holy ones in the midst of their brothers and called the Holy Spirit down upon them,
— fill all the leaders of your people with the Holy Spirit.
Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You yourself are the sole possession of your holy pastors,
— grant that those you have redeemed with your blood may remain always in you.
Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

Additional prayers: After these prayers have been prayed, all of you may use prayers in your own words spontaneously and according to your individual circumstances and situations.

Our Father

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Concluding Prayer

O God,
who decreed that Saint Barnabas,
a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
should be set apart to convert the nations,
grant that the Gospel of Christ,
which he strenuously preached,
may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

When a priest or deacon presides over the Office and no other Hour follows:

Priest: The Lord be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

. Amen.

HYMN

O God of Mercy, your presence comes and fills our desires,
And brings peace to our sighs.
Helpful savior, appear before us!
Come and open the heavens for the guilty man,
Heavenly victim, save him from the abyss.
O God of Mercy, your presence comes and fills our desires,
And brings peace to our sighs.

A hard slavery would have been our share:
He broke our irons and saved the universe.
In his honor, all the heavens bow down,
Our sins disappear before his face,
With his birth, all things yield before his power.
A hard slavery would have been our share:
He broke our irons and saved the universe.

INTERCESSIONS (Evening Prayer)

Brethren, let us pray to the Lord Jesus, the refuge of our souls; let us ask him:
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, whose heart when pierced by a lance poured forth blood and water and gave birth to your spouse the Church,
— cleanse and sanctify us.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, holy temple of God, slain by men and raised up again by the Father,
— make your Church the dwelling place of the Most High.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, King and center of all hearts, you love us and lead us to yourself with unending love and mercy,
— renew your covenant with all men.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, our peace and reconciliation, you unite all in the peace of the new creation and put enmity to death through the cross,
— show us the path to the Father.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, our life and resurrection, you refresh the burdened and give rest to the weary,
— draw all sinners to yourself.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.

Jesus, because you loved us with so great a love, you were obedient even to death on the cross,
— raise up again all who sleep in your peace.
Most loving Lord, have mercy on us.
