Saint Dominic Savio

St. Dominic Savio was born on April 2, 1842, in Riva, Italy, to Charles and Bridgid Savio. A peaceful Christian home environment helped prepare his soul to receive great light and grace from God. He attended Church every morning and served at Mass. At the age of seven, he made four important resolutions during his First Holy Communion: (1) Frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive Holy Communion as often as permitted. (2) Sanctify Sundays and holy days. (3) Consider Jesus and Mary as friends. (4) Choose death rather than sin.

At 12, Dominic joined St. John Bosco at the Oratory in Turin, where Don Bosco ignited a deep love for God and devotion to the Virgin Mary in him. Dominic was known for his prayerfulness and growing spirituality. He once stated, "I am not capable of doing big things, but I want to do everything, even the smallest things, for the greater glory of God."

In his zeal, he attempted voluntary penances to draw closer to Jesus. However, Fr. Bosco corrected him, encouraging Dominic to focus on his studies and maintain a cheerful disposition. With Don Bosco's support, Dominic founded the Sodality of the Immaculate Conception to promote devotion to Mother Mary.

Due to frail health, Dominic suffered from lung issues and was sent home to recuperate. On March 9, 1857, he exclaimed, "Oh, what a beautiful sight I see!" before passing away. St. Pius X remarked that Dominic, who preserved his baptismal innocence to the end, was indeed a saint. He was canonized in 1954 by Pope Pius XII and is the patron saint of choirboys and juvenile delinquents.

St. Dominic Savio, a model of purity, piety, penance, and apostolic zeal for youth, pray that we may serve God in our ordinary duties with fervent devotion.
