Saint Isidore the Farmer and his wife, Saint Maria de la Cabeza, are a revered 12th-century Spanish married couple celebrated as the patron saints of farmers, rural laborers, and rural communities. Together, they are powerful symbols of holiness, marital devotion, and charity within the Catholic faith.
- Life & Vocation: Born into a poor family in Madrid, Spain, he spent his entire life working as a day laborer and farmer for a wealthy landowner named Juan de Vargas.
- The Miracles: Isidore is famous for his deep piety and the miraculous assistance he received. Because he insisted on attending daily Mass, his employer suspected him of slacking off. However, the landowner reportedly witnessed angels guiding the plow for Isidore while he prayed. He is also credited with creating miraculous springs and providing abundant food for the poor from nearly empty cupboards.
- Legacy: He died in 1130 and was canonized in 1622. His feast day is celebrated annually on May 15.
- Life & Vocation: Born Maria Toribia in Torrelaguna, Spain, she married Isidore and the couple shared a deep commitment to faith and charity. After the tragic death of their only child in infancy, they made a mutual vow of celibacy and dedicated themselves to God.
- The Miracles: Maria was known to constantly keep a pot of stew on her fireplace, ensuring she had enough to feed the hungry people her husband brought home. She is recorded as miraculously multiplying food when supplies ran low. She is also venerated as Santa Maria de la Cabeza because her relics have frequently been carried in processions to invoke rain during droughts.
- Legacy: After Isidore's passing, she lived as a hermit and performed miracles. Her relics were laid to rest next to her husband's at Saint Andrew's Church in Madrid in 1645. Her primary feast day is September 9, though she is also venerated alongside her husband on May 15.
