Saint Christopher Magallanes

St. Christopher Magallanes was born on July 30, 1869, in Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico. He is remembered as a fervent priest and a martyr who courageously lived his faith during the turbulent times of the Mexican Revolution. Raised in a devout family, he was ordained a priest in 1899 and devoted his life to pastoral ministry, focusing on evangelization and education. He recognized the importance of social and religious education in promoting the faith, especially in rural areas. To this end, he helped establish schools and agricultural projects, aiming to improve the lives of the poor and to deepen their faith amidst growing anti-Catholic sentiment.

The early 20th century was a period of severe persecution for the Catholic Church in Mexico. The government, aiming to diminish the Church's influence over the people, enacted laws restricting religious freedoms. Priests were forbidden from wearing clerical attire, religious instruction was banned, and many churches were closed. In response, St. Christopher Magallanes discreetly ministered to the faithful, celebrating Mass in secret locations, and continued his efforts to evangelize, fully aware of the dangers he faced.

St. Pope John Paul II beatified St. Christopher Magallanes and his companions on November 22, 1992, and canonized them on May 21, 2000.

St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions, obtain for us the grace of steadfast faith in the face of adversity.
