The recognition officially grants the young Carmelite the title “Venerable,” one of the final stages on the path toward sainthood in the Catholic Church.
Born in February 1982 in Mfou-Awaé in Cameroon’s Catholic Archdiocese of Yaoundé, Jean-Thierry entered the Carmelite Order in July 2003. After beginning his novitiate the following year, his formation was abruptly interrupted when doctors discovered a malignant tumor in his right knee.
Despite the devastating diagnosis, the young Carmelite became known for his serenity, deep faith, and concern for others even amid intense suffering.
Following unsuccessful medical treatment attempts, his right leg was amputated in November 2004 at a hospital in Yaoundé.
According to accounts from the Carmelite Order, Brother Jean-Thierry remained peaceful throughout his illness and constantly encouraged those around him, including fellow patients, caregivers, and visitors.
In August 2005, he was transferred to Italy for rehabilitation, further treatment, and continuation of his religious formation. The move came through the support of the Carmelite Province of Lombardy, which had established the Order’s mission in Cameroon in 1984.
However, medical examinations in Legnano revealed that the cancer had spread throughout his body. Though he later received treatment at a renowned cancer institute in Turin, doctors were unable to stop the disease.
Even as his health deteriorated, Brother Jean-Thierry continued to radiate joy and spiritual strength. In December 2005, with special permission from the Superior General of the Carmelites and the Vatican, he professed his solemn vows from his hospital room in Legnano.
His mother, Marie Thérèse Ebogo, was present for the emotional ceremony, which drew Priests, women and men Religious, young people, friends, and the sick who had become inspired by his witness of faith.
Witnesses recalled that the young Carmelite rarely focused on his own pain but instead dedicated himself to comforting others.
Brother Jean-Thierry died in January 2006, after receiving the Eucharist during a Mass celebrated in his hospital room. Hours before slipping into a coma, he reportedly pointed to an image of Divine Mercy hanging on the wall and exclaimed in French, “How beautiful Jesus is!”
This announcement is of historic significance for Cameroon. Jean-Thierry Ebogo has indeed become the second Cameroonian to receive this title, after Fr. Simon Mpecke, affectionately known as Baba Simon, who was declared Venerable in May 2023.
