The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is a significant feast that commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. The observance of this feast is of great antiquity. St. Augustine of Hippo has mentioned in his writings that this feast is of Apostolic origin. Following the account of Acts 1:3, that the risen Jesus appeared for 40 days prior to his Ascension, the feast of Ascension is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter. However, Roman Catholic parishes in a number of countries that do not observe the feast as a public holiday have obtained permission from the Vatican to move observance of the Feast of the Ascension from the traditional Thursday to the following Sunday, the Sunday before Pentecost. This is in keeping with a trend to move Holy Days of Obligation from weekdays to Sunday, encouraging more Christians to observe important feasts.

Jesus himself had told his disciples that it was good for him to go away because only then would he send them another Helper, the Spirit of truth (John 16:7-16). And that's exactly what happened on the Day of Pentecost, ten days after Jesus' Ascension. The Spirit descended on the Church with power, inaugurating a new age in the history of salvation. The Ascension of Our Lord marks the end of the "historical Christ's" presence on earth and the beginning of the Church's presence as the Body of Christ. Jesus, by His death and resurrection, opened the gates of heaven for all humanity, and His Ascension demonstrates this to us. It is His proof that those of us who believe in Him in faith and follow Him will also be raised on the last day and enter heaven.

Jesus, Our Saviour, kindle in our hearts a longing for the heavenly homeland and cause us to move forward, following You.
