St. Mary Ann of Jesus of Paredes

St. Mary Ann of Jesus of Paredes, known as the Lily of Quito, was born on October 31, 1618, in Quito, a part of the Spanish Empire. The daughter of noble parents, she showed an early inclination towards prayer, penance, and charity, inspired by the lives of saints. Defying societal expectations, she rejected numerous marriage proposals to dedicate her life to God.

During her life, Quito faced many adversities such as earthquakes, epidemics, and volcanic eruptions. Mary Ann became known for her charity and fervent prayers, believed to have spared the city from further calamities. She practiced severe fasting and rigorous self-discipline in her quest for spiritual purity. Her profound dedication to the Eucharist led her to spend long hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, experiencing mystical encounters that deepened her commitment to salvation for others.

Choosing not to enter a convent, Mary Ann lived a secluded life at home, turning it into a center of prayer and community service. She cared for the sick, poor, and needy, often inviting them into her space for support. Mary Ann passed away on May 26, 1645, at the age of 26. Following her death, her holiness was recognized, with miracles reported through her intercession, garnering a devoted following. Beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1853 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950, she became the first canonized saint from what is now Ecuador and is venerated as the country's patroness. Her life continues to inspire many for her unwavering faith, compassion, and complete dedication to God's will.

St. Mary Ann of Jesus, pray that we may love and serve God with all our heart, mind, and strength.
