St. Isidore was born in 1070 in Madrid, Spain. He came from a poor family and worked as a farmer on land owned by a wealthy man named John de Vergas. He was a devoutly religious person and worked diligently, which impressed John, and he allowed Isidore to worship daily in the chapel on the property. However, his co-workers often accused him of neglecting his duties due to his devotion to prayer. His boss went to investigate the allegation, but instead of finding Isidore in the fields plowing, he found Angels doing the work while he was praying in Church.
Another miracle happened when his master saw angels plowing on both sides. This meant Isidore’s work was triple that of his fellow field workers. John eventually elevated him to the position of a bailiff of his entire estate of Lower Caramanca. He married Maria de la Cabeza, who was similarly righteous and humble, and she, too, was canonized as a saint. They had a son. One day, their child accidentally fell into a deep well. The parents were extremely worried and prayed fervently while attempting to rescue their child. To their amazement, they witnessed the water level rising, ultimately bringing the child back to the surface.
St Isidore’s wife would often keep a large pot of stew on the boil for her husband when he returned from work, knowing he would likely be accompanied by poor people he met. On occasions, the pot miraculously seemed to feed many more than it could contain. Isidore died in 1130 of natural causes. After touching the relics of Isidore, King Philip III of Spain was cured of a deadly disease. On 12 March 1622, St. Isidore was canonized by Pope Gregory XV. Isidore is the patron saint of farmers, rural communities, Madrid in Spain, and the United States National Rural Life Conference.
St. Isidore, pray that we may embark upon our daily labors with unwavering dedication while graciously carving out precious moments to commune with our beloved Lord.
