First Reading: Acts 5: 34-42

But one in the council rising up, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, respected by all the people, commanded the men to be put forth a little while. And he said to them: Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do, as touching these men. For before these days rose up Theodas, affirming himself to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all that believed him were scattered, and brought to nothing. After this man, rose up Judas of Galilee, in the days of the enrolling, and drew away the people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as consented to him, were dispersed. And now, therefore, I say to you, refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this council or this work be of men, it will come to nought; But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest perhaps you be found even to fight against God. And they consented to him. And calling in the apostles, after they had scourged them, they charged them that they should not speak at all in the name of Jesus; and they dismissed them. And they indeed went from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer reproach for the name of Jesus. And every day they ceased not in the temple, and from house to house, to teach and preach Christ Jesus.

Gospel: John 6: 1-15

After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased. Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand. When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him: There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many? Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would. And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world. Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.

Words of the Holy Father:

The parable describes a concrete fact: the people were hungry and Jesus engaged his disciples so that this hunger could be satisfied. This is the concrete fact. Jesus did not only offer this to the crowd — he offered his Word, his solace, his salvation, ultimately his life —, but he certainly did this too: he took care of the food for the body. God’s love for a humanity that is hungry for bread, freedom, justice, peace and, above all, his divine grace, never fails. Even today, Jesus continues to feed, to make his presence alive and comforting, and he does so through us. So the Gospel invites us to be available and hard working, like that youth who, realizing he had five loaves, says: “I contribute this, then you will see [to it] ...”. Faced with the cry of hunger — all types of “hunger” — of many brothers and sisters in every part of the world, we cannot be detached and calm spectators. The proclamation of Christ, Bread of eternal life, requires a generous commitment of solidarity toward the poor, the weak, the least ones, the defenceless. (Angelus, 29 July 2018)

Santo Athanasius Agung, Uskup dan Pujangga.

Gereja Pembela terbesar ajaran Gereja Katolik tentang Tritunggal MahaKudus dan misteri Penjelmaan Sabda menjadi Manusia ialah Santo Athanasius, Uskup Aleksandria, Mesir. Athanasius lahir di Aleksandria, kurang lebih pada tahun 297 dan meninggal dunia pada tanggal 2 Mei 373. Beliau dikenal sebagai ‘Bapak Ortodoksi’ karena perjuangannya yang besar dalam menentang ajaran-ajaran sesat yang berkembang pada masa itu. Pada tahun 318, Athanasius ditabhiskan menjadi diakon, dan ditunjuk sebagai sekretaris Uskup Aleksandria. Dalam kurun waktu singkat setelah tabhisan diakon itu, ia menerbitkan karangannya tentang rahasia Penjelmaan. Sebagai sekretaris Uskup, ia berhubungan erat dengan para rahib padang gurun, seperti santo Antonius, sang pertapa dari Mesir. Athanasius sendiri sangat tertarik sekali dengan kehidupan para rahib itu. Akhirnya dia sendiri pun meneladani cara hidup para pertapa itu dan menjadi seorang pendoa besar. Menanggapi ajaran sesat Arianisme, Athanasius bersama uskupnya pergi menghadiri Konsili Nicea (sekarang: Iznik, Turki) yang diprakarsai oleh kaisar Konstantianus. Dalam konsili itu, Athanasius terlibat aktif dalam diskusi-diskusi mengenai Ke-Allah-an Yesus Kristus,Pribadi kedua dalam Tritunggal MahaKudus. Sekembali dari konsili itu, peranan Athanasius semakin terasa penting, terutama setelah meninggalnya uskup Aleksandria enam bulan kemudian. Sebagai pengganti Uskup Aleksandria, Athanasius dipilih menjadi uskup Aleksandria. Dalam tugasnya sebagai uskup, Athanasius mengunjungi seluruh wilayah keuskupannya, termasuk pertapaan-pertapaan para rahib. Ia mengangkat seorang uskup untuk wilayah Ethiopia. Ia memimpin keuskupannya selama 45 tahun. Pada masa kepemimpinannya Arianisme mulai timbul lagi di Mesir. Dengan tegas Athanasius menentang Arianisme itu. Ia banyak menghadapi tantangan. Sebanyak lima kali ia terpaksa melarikan diri untuk menyelamatkan diri dari kepungan musuhnya. Athanasius dikenal sebagai seorang uskup yang banyak menulis. Dengan tulisan-tulisannya ia berusaha menerapkan dan membela ajaran iman yang benar. Ia meninggal dunia pada tanggal 2 Mei 373.

Santo Boris, Raja dan Pengaku Iman.

Boris adalah raja pertama Bulgaria yang menganut agama Kristen dan giat menyebarkan Injil. Sembilan tahun sebelum kematiannya, ia turun takhta dan menjadi biarawan. Boris dihormati sebagai santo nasional Bulgaria. Ia meninggal dunia pada tahun 709.

Santo Sigismund, Pengaku Iman.

Raja Burgundia yang baru menjadi Katolik itu atas hasutan istrinya yang kedua menyuruh orang mencekik puteranya sendiri dari ratu pertama (yang sudah meninggal). Tidak lama berselang, ia bertobat sungguh-sungguh dan banyak berbuat amal. Santo Sigismund dikalahkan oleh raja Franken dan di buang ke dalam sumur bersama anak-istrinya dan mati lemas pada tahun 524.

Kis 5:34 Tetapi seorang Farisi dalam Mahkamah Agama itu, yang bernama Gamaliel, seorang ahli Taurat yang sangat dihormati seluruh orang banyak, bangkit dan meminta, supaya orang-orang itu disuruh keluar sebentar.
Kis 5:35 Sesudah itu ia berkata kepada sidang: "Hai orang-orang Israel, pertimbangkanlah baik-baik, apa yang hendak kamu perbuat terhadap orang-orang ini!
Kis 5:36 Sebab dahulu telah muncul si Teudas, yang mengaku dirinya seorang istimewa dan ia mempunyai kira-kira empat ratus orang pengikut; tetapi ia dibunuh dan cerai-berailah seluruh pengikutnya dan lenyap.
Kis 5:37 Sesudah dia, pada waktu pendaftaran penduduk, muncullah si Yudas, seorang Galilea. Ia menyeret banyak orang dalam pemberontakannya, tetapi ia juga tewas dan cerai-berailah seluruh pengikutnya.
Kis 5:38 Karena itu aku berkata kepadamu: Janganlah bertindak terhadap orang-orang ini. Biarkanlah mereka, sebab jika maksud dan perbuatan mereka berasal dari manusia, tentu akan lenyap,
Kis 5:39 tetapi kalau berasal dari Allah, kamu tidak akan dapat melenyapkan orang-orang ini; mungkin ternyata juga nanti, bahwa kamu melawan Allah." Nasihat itu diterima.
Kis 5:40 Mereka memanggil rasul-rasul itu, lalu menyesah mereka dan melarang mereka mengajar dalam nama Yesus. Sesudah itu mereka dilepaskan.
Kis 5:41 Rasul-rasul itu meninggalkan sidang Mahkamah Agama dengan gembira, karena mereka telah dianggap layak menderita penghinaan oleh karena Nama Yesus.
Kis 5:42 Dan setiap hari mereka melanjutkan pengajaran mereka di Bait Allah dan di rumah-rumah orang dan memberitakan Injil tentang Yesus yang adalah Mesias.
Mzm 27:1 Dari Daud. TUHAN adalah terangku dan keselamatanku, kepada siapakah aku harus takut? TUHAN adalah benteng hidupku, terhadap siapakah aku harus gemetar?
Mzm 27:4 Satu hal telah kuminta kepada TUHAN, itulah yang kuingini: diam di rumah TUHAN seumur hidupku, menyaksikan kemurahan TUHAN dan menikmati bait-Nya.
Mzm 27:13 Sesungguhnya, aku percaya akan melihat kebaikan TUHAN di negeri orang-orang yang hidup!

Yoh 6:1 Sesudah itu Yesus berangkat ke seberang danau Galilea, yaitu danau Tiberias.
Yoh 6:2 Orang banyak berbondong-bondong mengikuti Dia, karena mereka melihat mujizat-mujizat penyembuhan, yang diadakan-Nya terhadap orang-orang sakit.
Yoh 6:3 Dan Yesus naik ke atas gunung dan duduk di situ dengan murid-murid-Nya.
Yoh 6:4 Dan Paskah, hari raya orang Yahudi, sudah dekat.
Yoh 6:5 Ketika Yesus memandang sekeliling-Nya dan melihat, bahwa orang banyak berbondong-bondong datang kepada-Nya, berkatalah Ia kepada Filipus: "Di manakah kita akan membeli roti, supaya mereka ini dapat makan?"
Yoh 6:6 Hal itu dikatakan-Nya untuk mencobai dia, sebab Ia sendiri tahu, apa yang hendak dilakukan-Nya.
Yoh 6:7 Jawab Filipus kepada-Nya: "Roti seharga dua ratus dinar tidak akan cukup untuk mereka ini, sekalipun masing-masing mendapat sepotong kecil saja."
Yoh 6:8 Seorang dari murid-murid-Nya, yaitu Andreas, saudara Simon Petrus, berkata kepada-Nya:
Yoh 6:9 "Di sini ada seorang anak, yang mempunyai lima roti jelai dan dua ikan; tetapi apakah artinya itu untuk orang sebanyak ini?"
Yoh 6:10 Kata Yesus: "Suruhlah orang-orang itu duduk." Adapun di tempat itu banyak rumput. Maka duduklah orang-orang itu, kira-kira lima ribu laki-laki banyaknya.
Yoh 6:11 Lalu Yesus mengambil roti itu, mengucap syukur dan membagi-bagikannya kepada mereka yang duduk di situ, demikian juga dibuat-Nya dengan ikan-ikan itu, sebanyak yang mereka kehendaki.
Yoh 6:12 Dan setelah mereka kenyang Ia berkata kepada murid-murid-Nya: "Kumpulkanlah potongan-potongan yang lebih supaya tidak ada yang terbuang."
Yoh 6:13 Maka merekapun mengumpulkannya, dan mengisi dua belas bakul penuh dengan potongan-potongan dari kelima roti jelai yang lebih setelah orang makan.
Yoh 6:14 Ketika orang-orang itu melihat mujizat yang telah diadakan-Nya, mereka berkata: "Dia ini adalah benar-benar nabi yang akan datang ke dalam dunia."
Yoh 6:15 Karena Yesus tahu, bahwa mereka hendak datang dan hendak membawa Dia dengan paksa untuk menjadikan Dia raja, Ia menyingkir pula ke gunung, seorang diri.
