First Reading : Acts 6:8‐15

Stephen was filled with grace and power and began to work miracles and great signs among the people. But then certain people came forward to debate with Stephen, some from Cyrene and Alexandria who were members of the synagogue called the Synagogue of Freedmen, and others from Cilicia and Asia. They found they could not get the better of him because of his wisdom, and because it was the Spirit that prompted what he said. So they procured some men to say, ‘We heard him using blasphemous language against Moses and against God.’ Having in this way turned the people against him as well as the elders and scribes, they took Stephen by surprise, and arrested him and brought him before the Sanhedrin. There they put up false witnesses to say, ‘This man is always making speeches against this Holy Place and the Law. We have heard him say that Jesus the Nazarene is going to destroy this Place and alter the traditions that Moses handed down to us.’ The members of the Sanhedrin all looked intently at Stephen, and his face appeared to them like the face of an angel.

Gospel : John 6:22‐29

After Jesus had fed the five thousand, his disciples saw him walking on the water. Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves. Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten. When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me because you have seen the signs
but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that cannot last,
but work for food that endures to eternal life,
the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you,
for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent.’

Words of the Holy Father:

The crowd listens to the Lord’s invitation, but does not understand its meaning — as often happens to us — and asks him: “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” (v. 28). Those who are listening to Jesus think that he is asking them to observe the precepts in order to obtain more miracles like the multiplication of the loaves. This is a common temptation; to reduce religion to only the practice of its laws, projecting onto our relationship with God the image of the relationship between servants and their master: servants must carry out the tasks that the master assigns to them in order to enjoy his benevolence. We all know this. Therefore, the crowd wants to know from Jesus which actions it must perform in order to please God. But Jesus’ reply is unexpected: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (v. 29). Today, these words are also addressed to us: God’s work does not consist so much in “doing” things, but in “believing” in Him whom He sent. This means that faith in Jesus allows us to carry out God’s works. If we allow ourselves to be involved in this loving and trusting relationship with Jesus, we will be able to perform good works that exude the fragrance of the Gospel for the good and needs of our brothers and sisters. (Angelus, 5 August 2018)

Santo Hilarius dari Arles, Uskup.

Santo Hilarius lahir kira-kira pada tahun 401. Ketika meninjak masa remajanya, Hilarius masuk biara santo Honoratus di Pulau Lerins, Prancis dan ditabhiskan menjadi Uskup Agung Arles pada usia 29 tahun. Ia juga diangkat oleh Sri Paus Leo Agung (440-460) sebagai Uskup Metropolitan di Propinsi Gerejawi itu. Dalam jabatannya itu, Hilarius tetap menghayati cara hidup sederhana seorang rahib, dan rajin melakukan pekerjaan-pekerjaan tangan demi kesejahteraan para fakir miskin. Ia dikenal sebagai seorang Uskup yang tinggi disiplin hidupnya dan aktif dalam karya-karya pastoral. Dia memecat Uskup Chelidonius dan Proyektus dari jabatan karena kurang aktif dalam tugas dan kurang berdisiplin diri. Karena tindakan ini bukan merupakan wewenangnya, maka ia diberi peringatan tegas oleh Paus Leo Agung, dan diturunkan jabatannya sebagai uskup Metropolitan. Meskipun demikian, ia tetap menjadi Uskup Arles, dan terus berkarya seperti biasa hingga hari kematiannya pada tahun 449. Hilarius, seorang uskup yang sederhana, miskin, rajin dan mahir menafsirkan Kitab Suci.

Santa Yutta, Pengaku Iman.
Sebagai seorang bangsawan, ia menikmati kehidupan yang sejahtera. Hartanya berlimpah, namun setelah suaminya gugur di medan perang, Yutta meninggalkan segala kemewahannya dan mengalihkan perhatiannya untuk membantu kaum miskin dan merawat orang-orang buta. Yutta menjalankan devosi khusus kepada Hati Kudus Yesus. Ia meninggal dunia sebagai pertapa di Kulmsee, Prusia Timur.

Kis 6:8 Dan Stefanus, yang penuh dengan karunia dan kuasa, mengadakan mujizat-mujizat dan tanda-tanda di antara orang banyak.
Kis 6:9 Tetapi tampillah beberapa orang dari jemaat Yahudi yang disebut jemaat orang Libertini?anggota-anggota jemaat itu adalah orang-orang dari Kirene dan dari Aleksandria?bersama dengan beberapa orang Yahudi dari Kilikia dan dari Asia. Orang-orang itu bersoal jawab dengan Stefanus,
Kis 6:10 tetapi mereka tidak sanggup melawan hikmatnya dan Roh yang mendorong dia berbicara.
Kis 6:11 Lalu mereka menghasut beberapa orang untuk mengatakan: "Kami telah mendengar dia mengucapkan kata-kata hujat terhadap Musa dan Allah."
Kis 6:12 Dengan jalan demikian mereka mengadakan suatu gerakan di antara orang banyak serta tua-tua dan ahli-ahli Taurat; mereka menyergap Stefanus, menyeretnya dan membawanya ke hadapan Mahkamah Agama.
Kis 6:13 Lalu mereka memajukan saksi-saksi palsu yang berkata: "Orang ini terus-menerus mengucapkan perkataan yang menghina tempat kudus ini dan hukum Taurat,
Kis 6:14 sebab kami telah mendengar dia mengatakan, bahwa Yesus, orang Nazaret itu, akan merubuhkan tempat ini dan mengubah adat istiadat yang diwariskan oleh Musa kepada kita."
Kis 6:15 Semua orang yang duduk dalam sidang Mahkamah Agama itu menatap Stefanus, lalu mereka melihat muka Stefanus sama seperti muka seorang malaikat.
Mzm 119:23 Sekalipun pemuka-pemuka duduk bersepakat melawan aku, hamba-Mu ini merenungkan ketetapan-ketetapan-Mu.
Mzm 119:24 Ya, peringatan-peringatan-Mu menjadi kegemaranku, menjadi penasihat-penasihatku.

Yoh 6:22 Pada keesokan harinya orang banyak, yang masih tinggal di seberang, melihat bahwa di situ tidak ada perahu selain dari pada yang satu tadi dan bahwa Yesus tidak turut naik ke perahu itu bersama-sama dengan murid-murid-Nya, dan bahwa murid-murid-Nya saja yang berangkat.
Yoh 6:23 Tetapi sementara itu beberapa perahu lain datang dari Tiberias dekat ke tempat mereka makan roti, sesudah Tuhan mengucapkan syukur atasnya.
Yoh 6:24 Ketika orang banyak melihat, bahwa Yesus tidak ada di situ dan murid-murid-Nya juga tidak, mereka naik ke perahu-perahu itu lalu berangkat ke Kapernaum untuk mencari Yesus.
Yoh 6:25 Ketika orang banyak menemukan Yesus di seberang laut itu, mereka berkata kepada-Nya: "Rabi, bilamana Engkau tiba di sini?"
Yoh 6:26 Yesus menjawab mereka: "Aku berkata kepadamu, sesungguhnya kamu mencari Aku, bukan karena kamu telah melihat tanda-tanda, melainkan karena kamu telah makan roti itu dan kamu kenyang.
Yoh 6:27 Bekerjalah, bukan untuk makanan yang akan dapat binasa, melainkan untuk makanan yang bertahan sampai kepada hidup yang kekal, yang akan diberikan Anak Manusia kepadamu; sebab Dialah yang disahkan oleh Bapa, Allah, dengan meterai-Nya."
Yoh 6:28 Lalu kata mereka kepada-Nya: "Apakah yang harus kami perbuat, supaya kami mengerjakan pekerjaan yang dikehendaki Allah?"
Yoh 6:29 Jawab Yesus kepada mereka: "Inilah pekerjaan yang dikehendaki Allah, yaitu hendaklah kamu percaya kepada Dia yang telah diutus Allah."
