First Reading : Acts 8:26‐40

The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, ‘Be ready to set out at noon along the road that goes from Jerusalem down to Gaza, the desert road.’ So he set off on his journey. Now it happened that an Ethiopian had been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; he was a eunuch and an officer at the court of the kandake, or queen, of Ethiopia, and was in fact her chief treasurer. He was now on his way home; and as he sat in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah. The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up and meet that chariot.’ When Philip ran up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ ‘How can I’ he replied ‘unless I have someone to guide me?’ So he invited Philip to get in and sit by his side. Now the passage of scripture he was reading was this: Like a sheep that is led to the slaughter‐house, like a lamb that is dumb in front of its shearers, like these he never opens his mouth. He has been humiliated and has no one to defend him. Who will ever talk about his descendants, since his life on earth has been cut short! The eunuch turned to Philip and said, ‘Tell me, is the prophet referring to himself or someone else?’ Starting, therefore, with this text of scripture Philip proceeded to explain the Good News of Jesus to him. Further along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘Look, there is some water here; is there anything to stop me being baptised?’ He ordered the chariot to stop, then Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and Philip baptised him. But after they had come up out of the water again Philip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord, and the eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Philip found that he had reached Azotus and continued his journey proclaiming the Good News in every town as far as Caesarea.

Gospel : John 6:44‐51

Jesus said to the crowd: ‘No one can come to me unless he is drawn by the Father who sent me, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets: They will all be taught by God, and to hear the teaching of the Father, and learn from it, is to come to me. Not that anybody has seen the Father, except the one who comes from God: he has seen the Father. I tell you most solemnly, everybody who believes has eternal life.
‘I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the desert and they are dead; but this is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that a man may eat it and not die. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’

Words of the Holy Father:

This word of the Lord astonishes us, and makes us think. It introduces the dynamic of faith, which is a relationship: the relationship between the human person — all of us — and the Person of Jesus, where the Father plays a decisive role, and, of course, the Holy Spirit does too, which is implied here. To believe in Him, it is not enough to meet Jesus, it is not enough to read the Bible, the Gospel — this is important! But it is not enough. It is not even enough to witness a miracle, such as that of the multiplication of the loaves. So many people were in close contact with Jesus and they did not believe. In fact, they even despised and condemned him. And I ask myself: Why this? Were they not attracted by the Father? No, this happened because their hearts were closed to the action of God’s Spirit. If your heart is always closed, faith doesn’t enter! Instead God the Father draws us to Jesus: it is we who open or close our hearts. (Angelus, 9 August 2015)

Santo Bonifasius, Paus dan Pengaku Iman.

Santo Bonifasius lahir di Valeria, Italia. Beliau adalah anak seorang dokter. Pada masa kePausan Gregorius I (590-604) dia ditabhiskan menjadi diakon di Roma. Pada tahun 25 Agustus 608, Bonifasius terpilih menjadi Paus dan memimpin gereja hingga kematiannya pada tanggal 8 Mei 615. Selama masa kePausannya, Bonifasius memperoleh izin dari Kaisar Roma, Phocas (602-610) untuk merombak Pantheon, sebuah kuil kafir menjadi gereja untuk kepentingan ibadat gereja. Gereja ini dipersembahkan kepada perlindungan Bunda Maria dan para martir kudus. Untuk itu ia mengambil banyak relikiu para kudus dari katakombe-katakombe dan menempatkan di bawah kaki altar gereja itu.

Santo Benedictus II, Paus.

Hari kelahiran Benediktus tidak diketahui dengan pasti. Namun diketahui bahwa ia adalah warga kota Roma dan dikenal luas oleh umat sebagai seorang ahli Kitab Suci. Setelah tabhisan imamatnya, ia melayani Paus Agatho (678-681) dan Paus Leo II (682-683). Sepeninggal Paus Leo II, Benediktus terpilih menjadi pengganti pada tahun 683. Namun penobatannya sebagai Paus, baru terlaksana pada tanggal 26 Juni 684 ketika kaisar Konstantinus IV memberi persetujuaan dan restunya. Dalam masa kepemimpinannya, Benediktus berusaha membujuk dan meyakinkan kaisar agar sedikit melunakkan sikapnya dalam memberi restu dan pengesahan bagi para calon Paus. Sedangkan restu imam-imam dan umat seluruhnya dimintai seperlunya. Kecuali itu, ia dengan keras melancarkan perlawanan terhadap ajaran sesat Monothelithisme, yang mengajarkan bahwa Kristus hanya memiliki satu kemauan dan kehendak, yakni kehendak dan kemauan ilahi. Dia dikenal sebagai seorang Paus yang memperhatikan kelestarian gedung-gedung gereja dan menaruh keprihatinan besar kepada kehidupan umatnya teristimewa yang miskin dan melarat. Ia memperbaiki gedung-gedung gereja yang ada di Roma dan giat melakukan karya-karya cinta kasih. Ia meninggal dunia pada tanggal 8 Mei 685 dan dikuburkan di Basilika Santo Petrus di Roma.

Santo Aloysius Rabata, Martir dan Biarawan.

Sesaat sebelum menghembuskan nafasnya yang terakhir, biarawan Karmelit Italia ini masih mengampuni penyerang yang memukulinya sampai mati.

Kis 8:26 Kemudian berkatalah seorang malaikat Tuhan kepada Filipus, katanya: "Bangunlah dan berangkatlah ke sebelah selatan, menurut jalan yang turun dari Yerusalem ke Gaza." Jalan itu jalan yang sunyi.
Kis 8:27 Lalu berangkatlah Filipus. Adalah seorang Etiopia, seorang sida-sida, pembesar dan kepala perbendaharaan Sri Kandake, ratu negeri Etiopia, yang pergi ke Yerusalem untuk beribadah.
Kis 8:28 Sekarang orang itu sedang dalam perjalanan pulang dan duduk dalam keretanya sambil membaca kitab nabi Yesaya.
Kis 8:29 Lalu kata Roh kepada Filipus: "Pergilah ke situ dan dekatilah kereta itu!"
Kis 8:30 Filipus segera ke situ dan mendengar sida-sida itu sedang membaca kitab nabi Yesaya. Kata Filipus: "Mengertikah tuan apa yang tuan baca itu?"
Kis 8:31 Jawabnya: "Bagaimanakah aku dapat mengerti, kalau tidak ada yang membimbing aku?" Lalu ia meminta Filipus naik dan duduk di sampingnya.
Kis 8:32 Nas yang dibacanya itu berbunyi seperti berikut: Seperti seekor domba Ia dibawa ke pembantaian; dan seperti anak domba yang kelu di depan orang yang menggunting bulunya, demikianlah Ia tidak membuka mulut-Nya.
Kis 8:33 Dalam kehinaan-Nya berlangsunglah hukuman-Nya; siapakah yang akan menceriterakan asal-usul-Nya? Sebab nyawa-Nya diambil dari bumi.
Kis 8:34 Maka kata sida-sida itu kepada Filipus: "Aku bertanya kepadamu, tentang siapakah nabi berkata demikian? Tentang dirinya sendiri atau tentang orang lain?"
Kis 8:35 Maka mulailah Filipus berbicara dan bertolak dari nas itu ia memberitakan Injil Yesus kepadanya.
Kis 8:36 Mereka melanjutkan perjalanan mereka, dan tiba di suatu tempat yang ada air. Lalu kata sida-sida itu: "Lihat, di situ ada air; apakah halangannya, jika aku dibaptis?"
Kis 8:37 (Sahut Filipus: "Jika tuan percaya dengan segenap hati, boleh." Jawabnya: "Aku percaya, bahwa Yesus Kristus adalah Anak Allah.")
Kis 8:38 Lalu orang Etiopia itu menyuruh menghentikan kereta itu, dan keduanya turun ke dalam air, baik Filipus maupun sida-sida itu, dan Filipus membaptis dia.
Kis 8:39 Dan setelah mereka keluar dari air, Roh Tuhan tiba-tiba melarikan Filipus dan sida-sida itu tidak melihatnya lagi. Ia meneruskan perjalanannya dengan sukacita.
Kis 8:40 Tetapi ternyata Filipus ada di Asdod. Ia berjalan melalui daerah itu dan memberitakan Injil di semua kota sampai ia tiba di Kaisarea.
Mzm 66:8 Pujilah Allah kami, hai bangsa-bangsa, dan perdengarkanlah puji-pujian kepada-Nya!
Mzm 66:9 Ia mempertahankan jiwa kami di dalam hidup dan tidak membiarkan kaki kami goyah.
Mzm 66:16 Marilah, dengarlah, hai kamu sekalian yang takut akan Allah, aku hendak menceritakan apa yang dilakukan-Nya terhadap diriku.
Mzm 66:17 Kepada-Nya aku telah berseru dengan mulutku, kini dengan lidahku aku menyanyikan pujian.
Mzm 66:20 Terpujilah Allah, yang tidak menolak doaku dan tidak menjauhkan kasih setia-Nya dari padaku.
Yoh 6:44 Tidak ada seorangpun yang dapat datang kepada-Ku, jikalau ia tidak ditarik oleh Bapa yang mengutus Aku, dan ia akan Kubangkitkan pada akhir zaman.
Yoh 6:45 Ada tertulis dalam kitab nabi-nabi: Dan mereka semua akan diajar oleh Allah. Dan setiap orang, yang telah mendengar dan menerima pengajaran dari Bapa, datang kepada-Ku.
Yoh 6:46 Hal itu tidak berarti, bahwa ada orang yang telah melihat Bapa. Hanya Dia yang datang dari Allah, Dialah yang telah melihat Bapa.
Yoh 6:47 Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya barangsiapa percaya, ia mempunyai hidup yang kekal.
Yoh 6:48 Akulah roti hidup.
Yoh 6:49 Nenek moyangmu telah makan manna di padang gurun dan mereka telah mati.
Yoh 6:50 Inilah roti yang turun dari sorga: Barangsiapa makan dari padanya, ia tidak akan mati.
Yoh 6:51 Akulah roti hidup yang telah turun dari sorga. Jikalau seorang makan dari roti ini, ia akan hidup selama-lamanya, dan roti yang Kuberikan itu ialah daging-Ku, yang akan Kuberikan untuk hidup dunia."
