St. Gemma Galgani was born on 12 March 1878 in a Tuscan village near
Lucca, Italy. Her father, Enrico, was a kind man, but she lost her mother, Aurelia, a holy woman, in 1886. After making her
First Holy Communion at 9, Gemma experienced a deep intimacy with God but was often reserved and loved solitude. At age 16, she developed
spinal meningitis and recovered through the intercession of
St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows and
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. One day, after receiving Holy Communion, Jesus said to her, "Gemma, I expect you on
Calvary."
On the vigil of the
Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1899, Gemma received the
sacred stigmata, which appeared every Thursday evening until Friday afternoon. She also experienced phenomena related to the
Passion, such as
sweating blood, scourging, and being crowned with thorns. Gemma often entered
ecstasies, received
visions, and had
revelations. She expressed her yearning for God's love, saying, "I am not at rest, nor shall I be, until Jesus has enkindled a little of his love in me!"
St. Gemma, you radiated angelic innocence and embodied a seraphic love in your soul. You bore the marks of our Lord's Passion in your flesh as a testament to your profound devotion. Obtain for us the grace to emulate your love for Jesus by remaining faithful despite struggles and persevering in our pursuit of holiness throughout our lives.
