Saint Asicus

Saint Asicus was one of the earliest of Saint Patrick's disciples and a skilled metalworker in gold, brass, and copper. He belonged to an aristocratic family that had donated land to St. Patrick. Asicus was an excellent goldsmith; he adorned the cathedral with elegant artistry and made chalices, patens, and metal book-covers for the churches founded by Patrick. Asicus was also skilled as a bellfounder and woodworker. Following the example of their master, the spiritual children of St. Assicus founded a school of art and produced beautiful objects of Celtic craft in the Diocese of Elphin

When Patrick established the Diocese of Elphin in County Roscommon around 450 AD, he appointed Asicus as its first bishop. Patrick later established an episcopal monastery there, one of the first monasteries he founded in Ireland, to which he appointed Asicus abbot-bishop. Asicus was a humble man who felt he was not worthy of his high office in the Church.

Asicus went to Rathlin O'Birne Island in Donegal Bay, where he resigned from his office and became a hermit. He remained there for seven years until he was found by the monks of Elphin, who persuaded him to return to Elphin with them. St. Ascius fell sick on the return journey and died at Rathcunga, County Donegal, in 490 AD. So the monks buried him in the churchyard of Rathcunga. The exact location of his grave is unknown. St. Ascius is the patron saint of the Diocese of Elphin and Coppersmiths

St. Asicus, a model of humility and piety, obtain for us the virtue of true humility.
