Saint Anicetus

Born in Emesa, Syria, St. Anicetus was the 11th in the succession of Popes and came to St. Peter's throne after St. Pius I's death in the year 155. During his 11-year reign, the Roman Church was disturbed by two major heresies: Gnosticism and Marcianism. Pope Anicetus actively opposed the errors of the heresies of Valentinus and Marcion and ensured the prevention of their spread.

During his reign, St. Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna, met with Pope Anicetus to discuss on the long-disputed question of the date on which Easter should be celebrated. The Roman Church sought uniformity, while the Asiatic Church maintained its tradition of celebrating on the 14th day of Nisan, the believed date of Jesus' resurrection. St. Irenaeus notes that neither could persuade the other, but they upheld their strong relationship despite their differences. This meeting exemplifies how Christians can disagree while still showing mutual respect and love, prioritizing unity over conflict. Their example continues to inspire Christians to value charity amidst disagreement.

Pope Anicetus died in April 168. According to church tradition, Anicetus was probably martyred under the persecution of Emperor Lucius Verus Aurelius

St. Anicetus, you were a peacemaker and a reconciler in the Church during your time on earth. Obtain for us the grace to work towards greater peace and unity within the Holy Catholic Church. Help us to remain steadfast in our faith, even as we seek to understand and respect the beliefs of others.
