During his reign,
St. Polycarp, the
Bishop of Smyrna, met with Pope Anicetus to discuss on the long-disputed question of the date on which
Easter should be celebrated. The Roman Church sought uniformity, while the
Asiatic Church maintained its tradition of celebrating on the 14th day of
Nisan, the believed date of
Jesus' resurrection.
St. Irenaeus notes that neither could persuade the other, but they upheld their strong relationship despite their differences. This meeting exemplifies how Christians can disagree while still showing mutual respect and love, prioritizing unity over conflict. Their example continues to inspire Christians to value charity amidst disagreement.
Pope Anicetus died in April 168. According to church tradition, Anicetus was probably martyred under the persecution of
Emperor Lucius Verus Aurelius.
St. Anicetus, you were a peacemaker and a reconciler in the Church during your time on earth. Obtain for us the grace to work towards greater peace and unity within the
Holy Catholic Church. Help us to remain steadfast in our faith, even as we seek to understand and respect the beliefs of others.
