Saint Mark the Evangelist

The Gospel According to Mark was written by St Mark the Evangelist, who was known to be one of the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ. He played a significant role in the early Christian movement alongside his mother, Mary, who hosted Christian meetings in her home. St Mark is also mentioned in Acts for his journey with St Paul and St Barnabas, where they spread the Word of God through Cyprus and Rome

We first read of Mark when Paul and Barnabas brought him to Antioch around 46 AD and later to Cyprus on their first apostolic journey. By 60 AD, he was in Rome with Paul, preparing to return to Asia Minor, where he had become well-known for his evangelistic efforts, including in the Aquileia region. Mark is the patron saint of Venice, where his remains were brought after being stolen from Alexandria in 815.

After leaving Aquileia, he is believed to have traveled to Egypt and established the Diocese of Alexandria. While in Rome, he wrote his Gospel, based on the teachings of St. Peter. However, upon returning to Alexandria, his attempts to convert pagans led to his martyrdom in 68 AD, where he was killed by being dragged through the streets. St. Mark is also revered as the patron of notaries and is invoked against lightning and hail.

St Mark, intercede for us to receive the grace to benefit from your teachings and walk steadfastly in the footsteps of Christ, ardently spreading the Good News.
