Upon the death of
Pope Pius IV in 1566, he was elected pope, marking a victory for those favoring reform. His unwavering stance on faith and discipline prompted significant changes in the
Papal court; Cardinals were urged to adopt simpler lifestyles, and Bishops were required to establish
diocesan seminaries and reside within their dioceses. His influence extended to the secular clergy, the Religious Orders, and the laity, significantly shaping the implementation of the
reforms of the Council of Trent.
Pius worked tirelessly to unite
Christian Princes against the
Turks, encouraging the faithful to do special penances and almsgiving for this intention. In 1567, funds were collected from monasteries and convents for this purpose. The
Turkish attack on Cyprus led to an alliance of
Venice, Genoa, Spain, and the
Holy See, culminating in the
naval victory at Lepanto on
October 7, 1571. In gratitude, Pius instituted the feast of
Our Lady of Victory, later known as the
feast of the Holy Rosary. Throughout his papacy, Pius maintained his
monastic virtues, spending time daily in meditation before the
Blessed Sacrament. He generously supported the poor and visited the sick. St. Pius V passed away on May 1, 1572.
St. Pius V, pray for us to remain steadfast in faith and never be separated from our Lord Jesus.
