Saint Crescentia Hoess

St. Crescentia Hoess, born Anna Hoess on October 20, 1682, in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria, is known for her deep spirituality and service to the sick and needy. Raised in a modest family, Crescentia faced numerous challenges from an early age, including poverty and the loss of her father when she was still very young. Despite these hardships, she developed a strong faith and a keen desire to dedicate her life to God.

As a young woman, Crescentia wished to join the convent of the Tertiaries of St. Francis in Kaufbeuren but was initially denied entrance due to her family's inability to provide the required dowry. However, her unwavering faith and persistence eventually led to her admission into the convent in 1703, not as a choir nun but as a lay sister assigned to perform menial tasks. In this humble capacity, Crescentia's spiritual depth and virtues truly began to shine, earning her the respect and admiration of both the convent community and the wider public.

In 1717, after years of demonstrating her devoutness and leadership abilities, Crescentia was appointed as the superior of the convent. Her tenure was marked by significant reforms aimed at deepening the spiritual life of the convent and improving the welfare of the sisters. She was known for her wise and compassionate leadership, miraculous healings, and profound mystical experiences, which drew many to seek her guidance and prayers.

Crescentia's health began to decline in her later years, yet she continued her work with undiminished zeal, offering comfort and hope to the sick and suffering. She passed away on April 5, 1744. Pope John Paul II canonized her on November 25, 2001. Today, Saint Crescentia Hoess is revered as a model of Christian virtue and selfless service.

St. Crescentia Hoess, help us to imitate your example of service by cheerfully working to accomplish the responsibilities assigned to us.
