Pope Saint Julius

St. Julius, a Roman native and the son of Rusticus, was elected to succeed Pope Mark on 6 February, 337. During his pontificate, he earned recognition for his wise and unwavering leadership and his judicious and firm intervention in the Arian controversies, which threatened to divide the early Christian Church.

Pope Julius is also known for his declaration that Jesus Christ was born on 25 December, a date that has since been celebrated as Christmas throughout the Christian world. As Pope, Julius sought to expand the influence of the Catholic Church by building new churches and basilicas to accommodate the growing number of worshippers in Rome and beyond. He was committed to ensuring that all believers had access to places of worship, and his efforts helped to establish a stronger foundation for the Church in its early years.

Pope St. Julius passed away in Rome on 12 April 352 and was laid to rest in the cemetery of Calepodius. His legacy as a wise and compassionate leader continues to inspire Christians around the world to this day.

St. Julius, through your wise and steadfast leadership, you led the early Catholic Church through a time of great uncertainty. Obtain for us the gifts of wisdom and understanding to overcome the challenges of our lives.
