First Reading : Numbers 21:4‐9

The Israelites left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt the land of Edom. On the way the people lost patience. They spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.’ At this God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel. The people came and said to Moses, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede for us with the Lord to save us from these serpents.’ Moses interceded for the people, and the Lord answered him, ‘Make a fiery serpent and put it on a standard. If anyone is bitten and looks at it, he shall live.’ So Moses fashioned a bronze serpent which he put on a standard, and if anyone was bitten by a serpent, he looked at the bronze serpent and lived.

O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you.

O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you. Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear towards me and answer me quickly when I call.

O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you.

The nations shall fear the name of the Lord and all the earth’s kings your glory, when the Lord shall build up Zion again and appear in all his glory. Then he will turn to the prayers of the helpless; he will not despise their prayers.

O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you.

Let this be written for ages to come that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord; for the Lord leaned down from his sanctuary on high. He looked down from heaven to the earth that he might hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die.

Verse Before the Gospel: Luke 8: 11

11 The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live for ever.

(11. 'This, then, is what the parable means: the seed is the word of God.

12. Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carries away the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved.

13. Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it, welcome the word with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up.

14. As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life and never produce any crops.

15. As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the word and take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perseverance)

Gospel : John 8:21‐30

Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘I am going away;

you will look for me and you will die in your sin.

Where I am going, you cannot come.’ The Jews said to one another, ‘Will he kill himself? Is that what he means by saying, “Where I am going, you cannot come”?’ Jesus went on: ‘You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I have told you already: You will die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’ So they said to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus answered: ‘What I have told you from the outset. About you I have much to say and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is truthful, and what I have learnt from him I declare to the world.’ They failed to understand that he was talking to them about the Father. So Jesus said: ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing of myself: what the Father has taught me is what I preach; he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.’ As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.

Words of the Holy Father:

Therefore, sin, is the work of Satan, and Jesus defeats Satan “by becoming sin”. Thus from the Cross Jesus “lifts up all of us”. For this reason “the Crucifix is not an ornament, it is not a work of art, with many precious stones, as are seen. The Crucifix is the mystery of God’s ‘annihilation’, which he did out of love”. In the desert, the serpent “prophesies salvation”. Indeed it is “lifted up and whoever sees it is healed”. But this salvation, was not made “with a magic wand by a god who makes things”. It was made instead “with the suffering of the Son of man, with the suffering of Jesus Christ”. (Santa Marta, 14 March 2016)

Santo Redemptus de Ferento, Uskup dan Pengaku Iman.

Santo Redemptus adalah Uskup Ferento. Ia mendapat penglihatan bahwa Italia terancam bahaya. Tidak lama kemudian suku Lombard membanjiri dan merusak negara itu. Ia meninggal dunia pada tahun 587.

Santo Edesius, Martir.

Santo Edesius lahir di Propinsi Lysia, Asia Kecil pada tahun 265. Sejak usia mudanya, ia menaruh perhatian dan minat besar pada filsafat yang pada waktu itu masih mencakup ilmu agama, ilmu falak, ilmu alam dan sebagainya. Pengetahuannya yang luas itu membawa dia kepada iman akan kebenaran ajaran Kristus. Sesudah dipermandikan, ia terus menambah ilmunya dengan tekun belajar. Ketika Kaisar Galerius melancarkan penganiayaan terhadap umat Kristen, Edesius tampil sebagai pembela kebenaran agama Kristen di hadapan pemimpin-pemimpin negara dan para hakim. Oleh karena itu, ia ditangkap dan menjalani hukuman kerja paksa di tambang-tambang negeri Palestina. Dari Palestina, ia pindah ke Mesir. Disana pun ia menyaksikan penganiayaan terhadap umat Kristen oleh penguasa-penguasa Aleksandria. Semua peristiwa penganiayaan itu membuat dia tertarik pada renungan tentang sengsara Yesus dan terhadap kata-kata Santo Yohanes dalam suratnya yang pertama: "Demikianlah kita ketahui kasih Kristus, yaitu bahwa Ia telah telah menyerahkan nyawa-Nya untuk kita; jadi kitapun wajib menyerahkan nyawa kita untuk saudara-saudara kita" (1 Yoh 3:16)

Terdorong oleh imanya, Edesius dengan berani membela orang-orang Kristen yang dianiaya itu. Dengan berani menerangkan keluhuran iman Kristen serta memprotes perlakukan bengis terhadap para penganut agama Kristen. Karena itu, sekali lagi ia ditangkap, disiksa lalu dibuang ke laut. Ia mati sebagai seorang martir, bukan hanya karena mempertaruhkan imannya tetapi juga karena cinta kasih terhadap sesamanya.

Bil 21:4 Setelah mereka berangkat dari gunung Hor, berjalan ke arah Laut Teberau untuk mengelilingi tanah Edom, maka bangsa itu tidak dapat lagi menahan hati di tengah jalan.

Bil 21:5 Lalu mereka berkata-kata melawan Allah dan Musa: "Mengapa kamu memimpin kami keluar dari Mesir? Supaya kami mati di padang gurun ini? Sebab di sini tidak ada roti dan tidak ada air, dan akan makanan hambar ini kami telah muak."

Bil 21:6 Lalu TUHAN menyuruh ular-ular tedung ke antara bangsa itu, yang memagut mereka, sehingga banyak dari orang Israel yang mati.

Bil 21:7 Kemudian datanglah bangsa itu mendapatkan Musa dan berkata: "Kami telah berdosa, sebab kami berkata-kata melawan TUHAN dan engkau; berdoalah kepada TUHAN, supaya dijauhkan-Nya ular-ular ini dari pada kami." Lalu Musa berdoa untuk bangsa itu.

Bil 21:8 Maka berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Musa: "Buatlah ular tedung dan taruhlah itu pada sebuah tiang; maka setiap orang yang terpagut, jika ia melihatnya, akan tetap hidup."

Bil 21:9 Lalu Musa membuat ular tembaga dan menaruhnya pada sebuah tiang; maka jika seseorang dipagut ular, dan ia memandang kepada ular tembaga itu, tetaplah ia hidup.

Mzm 102:2 (102-3) Janganlah sembunyikan wajah-Mu terhadap aku pada hari aku tersesak. Sendengkanlah telinga-Mu kepadaku; pada hari aku berseru, segeralah menjawab aku!

Mzm 102:3 (102-4) Sebab hari-hariku habis seperti asap, tulang-tulangku membara seperti perapian.

Mzm 102:16  (102-17) bila TUHAN sudah membangun Sion, sudah menampakkan diri dalam kemuliaan-Nya,

Mzm 102:17  (102-18) sudah berpaling mendengarkan doa orang-orang yang bulus, dan tidak memandang hina doa mereka.

Mzm 102:18  (102-19) Biarlah hal ini dituliskan bagi angkatan yang kemudian, dan bangsa yang diciptakan nanti akan memuji-muji TUHAN,

Mzm 102:19  (102-20) sebab Ia telah memandang dari ketinggian-Nya yang kudus, TUHAN memandang dari sorga ke bumi,

Mzm 102:20  (102-21) untuk mendengar keluhan orang tahanan, untuk membebaskan orang-orang yang ditentukan mati dibunuh,

Mzm 102:21  (102-22) supaya nama TUHAN diceritakan di Sion, dan Dia dipuji-puji di Yerusalem.

Yoh 8:21 Maka Yesus berkata pula kepada orang banyak: "Aku akan pergi dan kamu akan mencari Aku tetapi kamu akan mati dalam dosamu. Ke tempat Aku pergi, tidak mungkin kamu datang."

Yoh 8:22 Maka kata orang-orang Yahudi itu: "Apakah Ia mau bunuh diri dan karena itu dikatakan-Nya: Ke tempat Aku pergi, tidak mungkin kamu datang?"

Yoh 8:23 Lalu Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Kamu berasal dari bawah, Aku dari atas; kamu dari dunia ini, Aku bukan dari dunia ini.

Yoh 8:24 Karena itu tadi Aku berkata kepadamu, bahwa kamu akan mati dalam dosamu; sebab jikalau kamu tidak percaya, bahwa Akulah Dia, kamu akan mati dalam dosamu."

Yoh 8:25 Maka kata mereka kepada-Nya: "Siapakah Engkau?" Jawab Yesus kepada mereka: "Apakah gunanya lagi Aku berbicara dengan kamu?

Yoh 8:26 Banyak yang harus Kukatakan dan Kuhakimi tentang kamu; akan tetapi Dia, yang mengutus Aku, adalah benar, dan apa yang Kudengar dari pada-Nya, itu yang Kukatakan kepada dunia."

Yoh 8:27 Mereka tidak mengerti, bahwa Ia berbicara kepada mereka tentang Bapa.

Yoh 8:28 Maka kata Yesus: "Apabila kamu telah meninggikan Anak Manusia, barulah kamu tahu, bahwa Akulah Dia, dan bahwa Aku tidak berbuat apa-apa dari diri-Ku sendiri, tetapi Aku berbicara tentang hal-hal, sebagaimana diajarkan Bapa kepada-Ku.

Yoh 8:29 Dan Ia, yang telah mengutus Aku, Ia menyertai Aku. Ia tidak membiarkan Aku sendiri, sebab Aku senantiasa berbuat apa yang berkenan kepada-Nya."

Yoh 8:30 Setelah Yesus mengatakan semuanya itu, banyak orang percaya kepada-Nya.
