First Reading : Genesis 17:3‐9

Abram bowed to the ground and God said this to him, ‘Here now is my covenant with you: you shall become the father of a multitude of nations. You shall no longer be called Abram; your name shall be Abraham, for I make you father of a multitude of nations. I will make you most fruitful. I will make you into nations, and your issue shall be kings. I will establish my Covenant between myself and you, and your descendants after you, generation after generation, a Covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land you are living in, the whole land of Canaan, to own in perpetuity, and I will be your God. ‘You on your part shall maintain my Covenant, yourself and your descendants after you, generation after generation.’

Responsive Psalm : Psalm 104(105):4‐9

The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.

Consider the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, the judgements he spoke.

The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.

O children of Abraham, his servant, O sons of the Jacob he chose. He, the Lord, is our God: his judgements prevail in all the earth.

The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.

He remembers his covenant for ever, his promise for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.

Verse Before the Gospel: Psalms 95: 8

8 If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

(1. Come, let us cry out with joy to Yahweh, acclaim the rock of our salvation.

2. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving, acclaim him with music.

3. For Yahweh is a great God, a king greater than all the gods.

4. In his power are the depths of the earth, the peaks of the mountains are his;

5. the sea belongs to him, for he made it, and the dry land, moulded by his hands.

6. Come, let us bow low and do reverence; kneel before Yahweh who made us!

7. For he is our God, and we the people of his sheepfold, the flock of his hand. If only you would listen to him today!

8. Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as at the time of Massah in the desert,

9. when your ancestors challenged me, put me to the test, and saw what I could do!

10. For forty years that generation sickened me, and I said, 'Always fickle hearts; they cannot grasp my ways.'

11. Then in my anger I swore they would never enter my place of rest).

Gospel : John 8:51‐59

Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I tell you most solemnly, whoever keeps my word will never see death.’ The Jews said, ‘Now we know for certain that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, “Whoever keeps my word will never know the taste of death.” Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are you claiming to be?’ Jesus answered: ‘If I were to seek my own glory that would be no glory at all; my glory is conferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, “He is our God” although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say: I do not know him, I should be a liar, as you are liars yourselves. But I do know him, and I faithfully keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.’ The Jews then said, ‘You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!’ Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, before Abraham ever was, I Am.’ At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.

Words of the Holy Father:

The joy of faith, the joy of the Gospel is the touchstone of the faith of a person. Without joy that person is not a true believer. Let's go home, but before that, we celebrate here with these words of Jesus: “Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.” And ask the Lord for the grace to be rejoicing in hope, for the grace to see the day of Jesus when we will be with Him and for the grace of joy. Santo Vinsensius dari Lerins, Imam Biarawan.

Santo Vinsensius adalah seorang imam dan rahib di pertapaan Lerins, sebuah pulau yang tak jauh dari pantai Perancis. Beliau dikenal sebagai penerbit suatu tulisan yang menentang ajaran sesat Commonitorium yang muncul pada tahun 434 sesudah konsili Efesus.

Riwayat hidupnya pada masa kecil tidak banyak diketahui, meskipun karyanya dianggap penting dalam sejarah teologi. Karangan tersebut ditulis dibawah nama samaran Peregrinus. Didalamnya ia merumuskan prinsip dasar yang menegaskan bahwa sebuah doktrin iman katolik harus merupakan pokok iman yang diyakini, selalu, dimana-mana dan oleh semua orang beriman. Sebagai tambahan ia mengajarkan bahwa meskipun terdapat banyak tafsiran mengenai Kitab Suci, namun akhirnya Kitab Suci harus ditafsirkan menurut tradisi Gereja. Vinsensius meninggal dunia pada tahun 445.

Yehezkiel, Nabi.

Nabi Yehezkiel yang berarti "Allah membuat kuat" adalah putera dari imam Buzi (Yeh 1:3). Ia juga kemungkinan seorang imam yang berkeluarga. Pada tahun 597 SM ia dibuang bersama-sama dengan Yoakim ke Babilon. Lewat sebuah wahyu, ia dipanggil menjadi seorang nabi. Ia mengumumkan ramalannya tentang kehancuran kota Yerusalem yang sudah dekat melalui banyak ancaman hukuman dan perbuatan-perbuatan simbolis. Apabila kota Yerusalem benar-benar dihancurkan oleh Nebukadnezar pada tahun 586SM, barulah para buangan lebih menaruh perhatian pada pekerjaan Yehezkiel. Bagian kedua dari pewartaannya (25-38) mengungkapkan harapan akan kepulangan mereka dan datangnya saat keselamatan yang gemilang. Para musuh akan memperoleh putusan hukuman.

Yehezkiel meninggal di Babilon. Diluar beberapa laporan yang masih dipertentangkan, seperti misalnya: kematian istrinya secara mendadak (Yeh 24:18), tidak ditemukan berita tentang dirinya sendiri. Yehezkiel adalah penulis kitab yang menggunakan namanya dan menjadi judulnya.

Kej 17:3 Lalu sujudlah Abram, dan Allah berfirman kepadanya:

Kej 17:4 "Dari pihak-Ku, inilah perjanjian-Ku dengan engkau: Engkau akan menjadi bapa sejumlah besar bangsa.

Kej 17:5 Karena itu namamu bukan lagi Abram, melainkan Abraham, karena engkau telah Kutetapkan menjadi bapa sejumlah besar bangsa.

Kej 17:6 Aku akan membuat engkau beranak cucu sangat banyak; engkau akan Kubuat menjadi bangsa-bangsa, dan dari padamu akan berasal raja-raja.

Kej 17:7 Aku akan mengadakan perjanjian antara Aku dan engkau serta keturunanmu turun-temurun menjadi perjanjian yang kekal, supaya Aku menjadi Allahmu dan Allah keturunanmu.

Kej 17:8 Kepadamu dan kepada keturunanmu akan Kuberikan negeri ini yang kaudiami sebagai orang asing, yakni seluruh tanah Kanaan akan Kuberikan menjadi milikmu untuk selama-lamanya; dan Aku akan menjadi Allah mereka."

Kej 17:9 Lagi firman Allah kepada Abraham: "Dari pihakmu, engkau harus memegang perjanjian-Ku, engkau dan keturunanmu turun-temurun.

Mzm 105:4 Carilah TUHAN dan kekuatan-Nya, carilah wajah-Nya selalu!

Mzm 105:5 Ingatlah perbuatan-perbuatan ajaib yang dilakukan-Nya, mujizat-mujizat-Ny dan penghukuman-penghukuman yang diucapkan-Nya,

Mzm 105:6 hai anak cucu Abraham, hamba-Nya, hai anak-anak Yakub, orang-orang pilihan-Nya!

Mzm 105:7 Dialah TUHAN, Allah kita, di seluruh bumi berlaku penghukuman-Nya.

Mzm 105:8 Ia ingat untuk selama-lamanya akan perjanjian-Nya, firman yang diperintahkan-Nya kepada seribu angkatan,

Mzm 105:9 yang diikat-Nya dengan Abraham, dan akan sumpah-Nya kepada Ishak.

Yoh 8:51 Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya barangsiapa menuruti firman-Ku, ia tidak akan mengalami maut sampai selama-lamanya."

Yoh 8:52 Kata orang-orang Yahudi kepada-Nya: "Sekarang kami tahu, bahwa Engkau kerasukan setan. Sebab Abraham telah mati dan demikian juga nabi-nabi, namun Engkau berkata: Barangsiapa menuruti firman-Ku, ia tidak akan mengalami maut sampai selama-lamanya.

Yoh 8:53 Adakah Engkau lebih besar dari pada bapa kita Abraham, yang telah mati! Nabi-nabipun telah mati; dengan siapakah Engkau samakan diri-Mu?"

Yoh 8:54 Jawab Yesus: "Jikalau Aku memuliakan diri-Ku sendiri, maka kemuliaan-Ku itu sedikitpun tidak ada artinya. Bapa-Kulah yang memuliakan Aku, tentang siapa kamu berkata: Dia adalah Allah kami,

Yoh 8:55 padahal kamu tidak mengenal Dia, tetapi Aku mengenal Dia. Dan jika Aku berkata: Aku tidak mengenal Dia, maka Aku adalah pendusta, sama seperti kamu, tetapi Aku mengenal Dia dan Aku menuruti firman-Nya.

Yoh 8:56 Abraham bapamu bersukacita bahwa ia akan melihat hari-Ku dan ia telah melihatnya dan ia bersukacita."

Yoh 8:57 Maka kata orang-orang Yahudi itu kepada-Nya: "Umur-Mu belum sampai lima puluh tahun dan Engkau telah melihat Abraham?"

Yoh 8:58 Kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Aku berkata kepadamu, sesungguhnya sebelum Abraham jadi, Aku telah ada."

Yoh 8:59 Lalu mereka mengambil batu untuk melempari Dia; tetapi Yesus menghilang dan meninggalkan Bait Allah.
