Saint Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1181 or 1182, and was given the name Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone. Though born into a wealthy merchant family, he chose a life of poverty and simplicity, dedicating himself entirely to God. He is best known as the founder of the Franciscan Order, a community built on humility, service, and love for all creation. St. Francis emphasized living the Gospel in radical simplicity and joy, inspiring countless followers around the world. In 1223, St. Francis introduced the first Nativity scene, using live animals and people to help the faithful contemplate the birth of Christ in a tangible way—a tradition that continues to this day. He was also the first recorded person to bear the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, marking his profound union with Jesus in suffering and love. A gifted poet and mystic, St. Francis composed the “Canticle of the Sun,” a hymn of praise to God for the beauty of creation, addressing Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and all elements of nature as reflections of the Creator’s glory. St. Francis died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44, leaving behind a legacy of peace, humility, and reverence for God’s creation. Just two years later, in 1228, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX. He is honored as the patron saint of the environment, animals, and Italy, reminding us that all creation is a gift to be cherished and cared for.
