Saint Buonfiglio Monaldo

Saint Buonfiglio Monaldo took up a life of solitude and prayer by being one of seven Florentines who joined the Laudesi,  or the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin. They aimed to lead a life of penance and prayer but soon found themselves disturbed by increasing numbers of visitors.

They retired to the deserted slopes of Monte Senario near Florence, where the Blessed Virgin appeared to them again. There the nucleus of a new Order was formed, called Servants of Mary, or Servites, in recognition of their special manner of venerating the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady. Six members were ordained and developed as mendicant friars under James of Poggibonsi and Bishop Ardingo of Florence.

St. Buonfiglio was instrumental in establishing many houses and foreign missions in the Servite Order. He served as their first prior general from 1240 to 1256. He died on January 1, 1256, while the Passion was being read. Through his unwavering faith and devotion, St. Buonfiglio Monaldo served as a shining example of what it means to live a life dedicated to God.

Saint Buonfiglio Monaldo, obtain for us the grace to deepen our relationship with God through your intercession.
