As Venezuela continues to mourn after the devastating double earthquake that struck on June 24, stories of survival and faith have emerged from the ruins, offering hope amid the tragedy. Among the heartbreaking scenes of destruction, one extraordinary testimony has captured attention: a Marian statue that remained standing inside an apartment in Playa Grande, even as everything around it collapsed into rubble. The statue of the Virgin Mary, deeply cherished by resident Fernando Mardeni, was left untouched and intact while the surrounding structure was destroyed. Mardeni himself survived the disaster, calling the moment a sign of divine protection. “My name is Fernando Mardeni. That miracle happened in my apartment in Playa Grande during the earthquake on June 24,” he said. “As her faithful devotee, I began each day on my knees before her and ended every night with a candle in her honor.” Recalling the terrifying moments when the earthquake struck, he added, “As you can see, only the table moved so that the wall would not knock her down. She remained standing, and she brought me out of there alive.” While the earthquake left countless families grieving and communities devastated, testimonies like Fernando’s have become symbols of hope for many Venezuelans.
