The US Supreme Court | Title IX | Women’s sports

The US Supreme Court on June 30 ruled that states can prevent males from competing in women’s sports, marking a significant decision in the ongoing debate over transgender participation in athletics. The court ruled in cases from Idaho and West Virginia that federal Title IX rules allow schools to maintain separate men’s and women’s sports teams based on biological sex. The decision means states can prohibit males who identify as female from competing in women’s leagues. The cases were brought by young males who challenged state laws restricting their participation in female sports. The Supreme Court rejected arguments that Title IX requires schools to allow such participation, ruling that concerns over “safety and competitive fairness” are legitimate interests. The decision was largely split 6-3, with several justices expressing concerns about the impact on transgender athletes. The ruling gives states greater authority to define eligibility rules for women’s and girls’ sports while continuing a broader national debate over gender identity, equality, and athletic competition.
