Sister Leticia Ugboaja | US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers | Monica de la Cruz

A Catholic nun has been released from immigration custody after she was detained while walking to Sunday Mass in her religious habit in South Texas. Sister Leticia Ugboaja, a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, was on her way to Our Lady of Sorrows Church, located near the US-Mexico border, when she was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The incident quickly gained public attention after parish officials shared news of her detention online, leading to support from the community and intervention by South Texas lawmakers, including Monica de la Cruz. Sister Ugboaja, who volunteers as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the parish, is also a registered nurse at South Texas Health System. She previously spent a decade working as a certified nursing assistant. After discussions with federal officials, the nun was released and she returned home on Monday. The case has raised concerns and renewed discussions about immigration enforcement and the treatment of religious workers serving local communities.
