Saint Vincent Kaun

St. Vincent Kaun was born in Korea in the mid-16th century and was taken prisoner during a conflict with Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1591. During this time, St. Francis Xavier was leading efforts to bring Christianity to the region, and Vincent became one of the many who were converted. He joined the Jesuit seminary and served as a priest for three decades.

In 1614, Emperor Ogimachi issued an edict banning Catholicism, and Bishop St. Francis Pacheco was expelled from Japan, although many continued to practice their faith in secret. Eventually, Pacheco returned quietly. After enduring years of persecution, Fr. Vincent, Pacheco, and seven other Christians were arrested and burned alive in Nagasaki in 1626. Vincent was beatified in 1867 and later canonized in 1984.

St. Vincent Kaun, pray for us to be faithful witnesses to the Gospel and be courageous in the face of persecution.
