10 June 2025 (Tuesday) / Tuesday of week 10 in Ordinary Time / Ordinary Weekday

10 June 2025 (Tuesday)

Tuesday of week 10 in Ordinary Time.

Ordinary Weekday.

Readings from the Bible of the Roman Catholic Church:

First Reading: Second Corinthians 1: 18-22
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135
Alleluia: Matthew 5: 16
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16

First Reading : 2 Corinthians 1:18‐22

I swear by God’s truth, there is no Yes and No about what we say to you. The Son of God, the Christ Jesus that we proclaimed among you – I mean Silvanus and Timothy and I – was never Yes and No: with him it was always Yes, and however many the promises God made, the Yes to them all is in him. That is why it is ‘through him’ that we answer Amen to the praise of God. Remember it is God himself who assures us all, and you, of our standing in Christ, and has anointed us, marking us with his seal and giving us the pledge, the Spirit, that we carry in our hearts.

Responsive Psalm : Psalm 118(119):129‐133,135

Let your face shine on your servant.

Your will is wonderful indeed; therefore I obey it. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches the simple.

Let your face shine on your servant.

I open my mouth and I sigh as I yearn for your commands. Turn and show me your mercy; show justice to your friends.

Let your face shine on your servant.

Let my steps be guided by your promise; let no evil rule me. Let your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees.

Let your face shine on your servant.

Alleluia: Matthew 5: 16
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
16 Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
(16. In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven).
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel : Matthew 5:13‐16

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill‐top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp‐stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

For our reflection today:

The Lord Jesus tells his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:13,14). With these richly evocative images he wishes to pass on to them the meaning of their mission and their witness. Salt, in the cultures of the Middle East, calls to mind several values such as the Covenant, solidarity, life and wisdom. Light is the first work of God the Creator and is a source of life; the word of God is compared to light, as the Psalmist proclaims: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119[118]:105). The Prophet Isaiah says: “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday” (58:10). Wisdom sums up in itself the beneficial effects of salt and light: in fact, disciples of the Lord are called to give a new “taste” to the world and to keep it from corruption with the wisdom of God, which shines out in its full splendour on the Face of the Son because he is “the true light that enlightens every man” (Jn 1:9). United to him, in the darkness of indifference and selfishness, Christians can diffuse the light of God’s love, true wisdom that gives meaning to human life and action. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 6 February 2011)
