St. Colman of Dromore, who was born around 450 A.D., holds a cherished place in the history of early Christianity in Scotland and Ireland. Known affectionately as Mocholmoc, which translates to "my young Colum," he embodies the significance of devotion and learning from his earliest days. His life is documented in the "Life of Saint Colman of Dromore," preserved in the Codex Salmanticensis, revealing that he hailed from the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada.
Tradition tells us that St. Colman was baptized by his uncle, a bishop sharing his name, in a miraculous event where a fountain sprang forth from the earth to facilitate the baptism. Following this divine moment, his parents entrusted him to St. Caylan, who was the abbot at Nendrum on Mahee Island, where Colman received a solid education in literature and spiritual guidance. Remarkably gifted with a perfect memory, he excelled under Caylan's mentorship, performing miracles, including moving a rock that impeded the monks' prayers.
Colman's quest for knowledge led him to study under St. Ailbe of Emly in south Tipperary, where he deepened his understanding of the Scriptures. After several years, he returned to Nendrum to assist Caylan. Seeking guidance on his future, he consulted his friend, Aengus MacNissi, who encouraged him to establish a monastery in the Coba plain, located within the Lagan Valley. He followed this advice and founded his community by the river Locha, now called the Lagan. Among his pupils was St. Finnian of Moville, who later established a monastery at Movilla. Colman’s feast day is celebrated on June 7, and he is revered as the patron saint of the Diocese of Dromore, which emerged from his monastery, reflecting his lasting impact on the Christian faith.
St. Colman of Dromore, that we may be bestowed with steadfast faith firmly rooted in the Word of God. May our daily lives become a continual prayer to the Almighty God.
