Saint Angela of Foligno was born into a prominent family in Foligno, Italy. Angela initially pursued wealth, status, and the comforts of life. As a devoted wife and mother, she remained entrenched in the distractions of her affluent existence. However, around the age of 40, she recognized the emptiness of her life and sought God's help in the Sacrament of Penance.
Her Franciscan confessor helped Angela to seek God's pardon for her previous life and to dedicate herself to prayer and the works of charity. Shortly after her conversion, her husband and children died. She sold most of her possessions, joined the Secular Franciscan Order, and dedicated herself to serving the poorest in her community, taking on the humble roles of nurse and beggar. With the encouragement of her confessor, Angela authored the "Book of Visions and Instructions," a profound work that not only reveals her struggles and temptations post-conversion but also expresses her gratitude for the Incarnation of Jesus.
Through her writings and her unwavering devotion, she earned the revered title of "Teacher of Theologians." Beatified in 1693 and canonized in 2013, Saint Angela's life resonates with a powerful message: true worth is not found in material possessions or societal accolades but in being cherished as a creation of God. Her journey from self-centeredness to self-emptying inspires all, illustrating that the path to holiness often requires a radical shift in priorities. By embracing humility and charity, she exemplifies how one can find profound meaning and purpose in serving others, reflecting the divine love that transforms lives.
