Blessed William Carter was born in London
in 1548. He was apprenticed to the queen's printer, John Cawood, for ten years. He also served as secretary to Nicholas Harpsfield, the last Catholic archdeacon of Canterbury, while Harpsfield was a prisoner of faith. He later started a printing business, producing books upholding Catholicism. In 16th-century England, this was not an approved or easy task. He repeatedly offended public officials by publishing works that encouraged Catholics to keep firm in their faith. Subsequently, he was imprisoned and tortured for eighteen months, during which time his wife also passed away. He was put on trial, and the jury took no time to reach a guilty verdict. After making his final confession to a priest who was a co-prisoner, on 11 January 1584, he was hanged, drawn, and quartered. He was beatified in 1987 by Pope John Paul II.
Prayer
Blessed William Carter, you fearlessly followed the faith amid persecution and trial. Pray for us to bear witness to our faith in hope and righteousness.
