Saint Augustine

St. Augustine was born in Thagaste, Algeria. Despite his mother, St. Monica's desire to raise him as a devout Christian, his father, who was a pagan, prevented it. During his youth, St. Augustine lived a sinful life and even fathered a child with a lover. However, at the age of 32, he had a change of heart and converted to Christianity. He was baptized along with his son. After his son passed away, St. Augustine decided to donate his wealth to the needy but kept his home, which he transformed into a monastery. When he turned 37, he was ordained as a Priest, and his impressive oratory skills led him to become a renowned preacher. A few years later, he was appointed as the Bishop of Hippo, and from then on, he devoted himself to a monastic lifestyle and worked tirelessly to convert the people of Hippo to Christianity. St. Augustine was a pioneering Christian author who believed that the Grace of Christ was crucial to human freedom. Augustine, an ancient Latin author and Christian, had a clear understanding of theological anthropology. He believed that humans were a perfect union of soul and body. In his later work, "On Care to Be Had for the Dead," he urged respect for the body, as it was an integral part of the human being. Augustine often used the metaphor of marriage to describe the unity of body and soul, stating that "your body is your wife." As he approached the end of his life, he spent his time in prayer and remorse. He asked for the penitential Psalms of David to be displayed on his walls so he could read them and cry without restraint. He died on August 28, 430.

O Lord, renew in Your Church the spirit with which You endowed Your Bishop Saint Augustine that, filled with the same spirit, we may thirst for You, the sole fount of true wisdom, and seek You, the author of heavenly love.
