First Reading : Acts 5:17‐26

The high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Prompted by jealousy, they arrested the apostles and had them put in the common gaol. But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out, ‘Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new Life.’ They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the high priest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin – this was the full Senate of Israel – and sent to the gaol for them to be brought. But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported, ‘We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked the door we found no one inside.’ When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what this could mean. Then a man arrived with fresh news. ‘At this very moment’ he said, ‘the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. They are standing there preaching to the people.’ The captain went with his men and fetched them. They were afraid to use force in case the people stoned them.

Gospel : John 3:16‐21

Jesus said to Nicodemus: ‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved. No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already,
because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son. On these grounds is sentence pronounced: that though the light has come into the world men have shown they prefer darkness to the light because their deeds were evil. And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, for fear his actions should be exposed; but the man who lives by the truth comes out into the light, so that it may be plainly seen that what he does is done in God.’

Words of the Holy Father:

The coming of Jesus into the world leads to a choice: whoever chooses darkness will face a judgment of condemnation; whoever chooses light will have a judgment of salvation. The judgement is always the consequence of the free choice of each person: whoever practices evil seeks the darkness; evil always hides, it covers itself. Whoever seeks the truth, that is, who practices what is good, comes to the light, illuminates the paths of life. Whoever walks in the light, whoever approaches the light, cannot but do good works. The light leads us to do good works. This is what we are called to do with greater dedication during Lent: to welcome the light into our conscience, to open our hearts to God’s infinite love, to his mercy full of tenderness and goodness, to his forgiveness. Do not forget that God always forgives, always, if we humbly ask for forgiveness. It is enough just to ask for forgiveness, and he forgives. In this way we will find true joy and will be able to rejoice in God’s forgiveness, which regenerates and gives life. (Angelus, 14 March 2021)

Santo Pius V, Paus.

Antonius Ghislieri adalah nama kecil Paus Pius V (1566-1572) . Ia lahir di desa Bosko, tidak jauh dari Milano pada tahun 1504. Orangtuanya miskin sehingga tidak mampu membiayai sekolahnya. Oleh karena itu Antonio sendiri berusaha bekerja untuk membantu orangtuanya. Kerjanya setiap hari adalah menjaga domba-domba mereka di pegunungan. Tetapi atas bantuan seorang dermawan, Antonio di sekolahkan di kampung asalnya di bawah bimbingan imam-imam Dominikan. Kemudian hari Antonio masuk biara Dominikan dan ternyata menjadi seorang biarawan yang pandai dan bijaksana serta taat pada aturan-aturan ordonya, taat pada pimpinan, suka akan kemiskinan dan kemurnian.
Ia menjadi mahaguru filsafat dan teologi. Pada umur 52 tahun, ia ditabhiskan menjadi Uskup dan setahun kemudian menjadi Kardinal. Pada tahun 1565, Paus Pius IV meninggal dunia. Para kardinal berkumpul dalam konklaf untuk memilih Paus baru. Pemilihan ini tidaklah mudah. Tiga minggu telah berlalu, tetapi pemilihan belum juga berhasil menemukan seseorang untuk menduduki tahkta kePausan. Akhirnya atas nasebat Karolus Borromeus yang hadir juga dalam konklaf itu, Antonio Ghislieri terpilih menjadi Paus. Seluruh gereja bersorak gembira karena mempunyai seorang Paus baru yang saleh dan suci.
Dalam menjalankan tugasnya sebagai pemimpin gereja, beliau menghadapi banyak masalah. Ia berusaha mewujudkan keputusan-keputusan Konsili Trente. Tugasnya ini dijalankan dengan baik. Ia dapat mengatasi masalah-masalah yang dihadapinya. Hidup sebagai seorang rahib tetap dipertahankannya. Baginya, doa merupakan senjata ampuh untuk menghadapi segala rintangan dan masalah. Tempat tidurnya dialasi dengan jerami kasar. Penderitaan Kristus direnungkannya setiap hari disertai dengan doa rosario. Kemenangan umat Kristen atas angkatan laut Turki dalam perang salib di Lavanto, diperoleh berkat doa rosario dari seluruh umat Katolik di seluruh dunia.
Dalam masa kepemimpinannya, beliau menyederhanakan cara hidup kePausan di Vatikan; menginstruksikan pembaharuan cara hidup ordo-ordo dan para imam projo; membrantas korupsi yang terjadi di Roma dan negara KePausan Vatikan; menginstruksikan pendirian seminari-seminari di setiap keuskupan. Semua rencana yang dirancangnya berhasil baik. Pada tanggal 1 Mei 1572, ia meninggal dunia setelah 6 tahun menjadi pemimpin gereja sejagat.

Santo Marianus dan Santo Yakobus, Martir.

Santo Marianus dan Santo Yakobus yang berjabatan masing-masing sebagai lektor dan diakon adalah martir gereja purba yang mati pada tahun 259, pada masa pemerintahan Kaisar Valerian (253-260). Keduanya ditangkap di Cirta (sekarang: Kontastin, Aljajair). Kemudian bersama banyak orang Kristen lainnya, mereka digiring ke Lambessa, sekitar 80 mil jauhnya dari Cirta. Disana mereka disiksa lalu dipenggal kepalanya bersama orang-orang Kristen lainnya.

Santo Yosef-Benedik Cottolengo, Pengaku Iman.

Santo Yosef-Benedik hidup antara tahun (1786-1842). Ia membangun rumah penginapan untuk para gelandangan, yatim-piatu dan penderita sakit yang terlantar. Yosef mengurus 8000 orang lebih semata-mata dari derma saja, karena ia percaya penuh kepada Penyelenggaraan Ilahi.

Kis 5:17 Akhirnya mulailah Imam Besar dan pengikut-pengikutnya, yaitu orang-orang dari mazhab Saduki, bertindak sebab mereka sangat iri hati.
Kis 5:18 Mereka menangkap rasul-rasul itu, lalu memasukkan mereka ke dalam penjara kota.
Kis 5:19 Tetapi waktu malam seorang malaikat Tuhan membuka pintu-pintu penjara itu dan membawa mereka ke luar, katanya:

Sementara itu Imam Besar dan pengikut-pengikutnya menyuruh Mahkamah Agama berkumpul, yaitu seluruh majelis tua-tua bangsa Israel, dan mereka menyuruh mengambil rasul-rasul itu dari penjara.
Kis 5:22 Tetapi ketika pejabat-pejabat datang ke penjara, mereka tidak menemukan rasul-rasul itu di situ. Lalu mereka kembali dan memberitahukan,
Kis 5:23 katanya: "Kami mendapati penjara terkunci dengan sangat rapihnya dan semua pengawal ada di tempatnya di muka pintu, tetapi setelah kami membukanya, tidak seorangpun yang kami temukan di dalamnya."
Kis 5:24 Ketika kepala pengawal Bait Allah dan imam-imam kepala mendengar laporan itu, mereka cemas dan bertanya apa yang telah terjadi dengan rasul-rasul itu.
Kis 5:25 Tetapi datanglah seorang mendapatkan mereka dengan kabar: "Lihat, orang-orang yang telah kamu masukkan ke dalam penjara, ada di dalam Bait Allah dan mereka mengajar orang banyak."
Kis 5:26 Maka pergilah kepala pengawal serta orang-orangnya ke Bait Allah, lalu mengambil kedua rasul itu, tetapi tidak dengan kekerasan, karena mereka takut, kalau-kalau orang banyak melempari mereka.

First Reading : Acts 4:32‐37

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they were all given great respect. None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need. There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’). He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money, and presented it to the apostles.

That is how it is with all who are born of the Spirit.’ ‘How can that be possible?’ asked Nicodemus. ‘You, a teacher in Israel, and you do not know these things!’ replied Jesus. ‘I tell you most solemnly, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen
and yet you people reject our evidence. If you do not believe me when I speak about things in this world, how are you going to believe me when I speak to you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.’

Words of the Holy Father:

The Gospel speaks of a certain Nicodemus (Jn 3:1-21), an elderly man, an authority in Israel, who goes to Jesus to get to know him; and the Lord speaks to him of the need to “be born anew” (cf. v. 3). But what does it mean? Can one be “reborn”? Is it possible to return to having the zest, the joy, the wonder of life, even in the face of so much tragedy? This is a fundamental question of our faith, and this is the longing of every true believer: the longing to be reborn, the joy of beginning anew. Do we have this longing? Does each of us have the wish to be born ever anew in order to meet the Lord? Do you have this wish? Indeed, one can easily lose it because, due to so many activities, so many projects to implement, in the end we are short of time and we lose sight of what is fundamental: the inner life of the heart, our spiritual life, our life which is the encounter with the Lord in prayer. Santa Katarina dari Siena, Perawan dan Pujangga.

Gereja pada abad ke-14, kota Sienna menjadi ibukota sebuah Republika yang makmur dan merdeka. Di kota inilah, Katarina lahir pada tahun 1347, keluarganya tergolong besar tapi sederhana. Demi keutuhan Gereja, Allah memilih dia menjadi pembimbing dan pelindung Gereja dalam suatu kurun waktu yang suram.
Santa Katarina tidak bersekolah dan tidak pandai menulis. Keterampilan membaca sangat sedikit dikuasainya. Hal ini sedikit menolongnya untuk mengikuti doa ofisi di kemudian hari ketika ia masuk biara. Ketika berusia 6 tahun, ia mengalami suatu peristiwa ajaib, yang memberi tanda surgawi bahwa ia akan dipilih Allah untuk suatu tugas khusus dalam Gereja. Ia melihat Kristus di atas gereja Santo Dominikus yang sedang memberkatinya. Peristiwa ini menyebabkan perubahan besar dalam hidupnya. Sejak saat itu, ia suka memencilkan diri untuk berdoa. Ibunya tidak suka melihat kelakuannya. Oleh karena itu, ia dipekerjakan di dapur dari pagi hingga malam. Ia tidak memberontak terhadap perlakuan ibunya. Sebaliknya, ia dengan taat dan rajin melakukan apa yang di suruh ibunya.
Kesabarannya dalam menaati suruhan ibunya, akhirnya membuahkan hasil yang baik. Ia mampu mengatasi segala kesulitan yang menimpanya, sambil terus berdoa kepada Tuhan. Sesudah mengalami banyak kesulitan, ia diijinkan orangtuanya untuk masuk ordo Ketiga Santo Dominikus. Di dalam biara ia tetap melaksanakan doa dan meditasi di samping karya amal dan kerasulannya. Lama-kelamaan ia menjadi pusat perhatian semua anggota biara. Kerohanian dan kepribadiannya yang menarik mengangkat dia ke atas jabatan pemimpin biara itu.
Situasi gereja pada masa itu kacau-balau. Imam-imam dan pimpinan Gereja tidak menampilkan diri secara baik. Peperangan antar negara dan antar raja-raja timbul dimana-mana. Di samping itu, Sri Paus di Avignon, Perancis yang sudah berusian 70 tahun menimbulkan percekcokan di kalangan pemimpin-pemimpin gereja. Dalam suatu penglihatan, Kristus menganjurkan kepada Katarina untuk menyurati Paus, raja-raja dan uskup serta para panglima guna memperbaiki keadaan masyarakat dan Gereja. Paus Gregorius XI memintanya pergi ke Pisa dan Florence untuk mendamaikan kedua republik itu. Katarina berhasil meyakinkan Paus untuk pulang ke Roma sebagai kota abadi dan pusat Gereja.
Semenjak masuk ke dalam Ordo ketiga Santo Dominikus, Katarina makin memperkeras puasanya. Banyak kali ia tidak makan, kecuali menerima Komuni Suci. Ia dikaruniai Stigmata / luka-luka Tuhan Yesus. Atas permohonannya, stigamata itu tidak terlihat oleh orang lain selama hidupnya. Kemudian setelah meninggal stigmata itu baru terlihat di badannya secara jelas. Katarina memiliki kharisma yang besar untuk mempengaruhi banyak orang. Ia berhasil membawa kembali banyak pendosa ke jalan Tuhan, termasuk mendamaikan raja-raja dengan Gereja. Semuanya itu dilihatnya sebagai anugerah Tuhan. Ia sendiri menganggap dirinya hanyalah alat Tuhan untuk menegakkan kemuliaan Tuhan. Pada tahun 1380 ia meninggal dunia di Roma dalam usia 33 tahun.

Santo Petrus dari Verona, Martir.

Santo Petrus lahir di Verona, Italia, pada tahun 1205. Ia mendapat pendidikan di sekolah Katolik, padahal keluarganya menganut faham Katarisme. Faham Katarisme mengajarkan bahwa segala sesuatu yang bersifat kebendaan (materi) adalah buruk dan jahat, oleh karena itu bukan ciptaan Allah yang MahaBaik. Bumi dan segala isinya yang bersifat kebendaan bukan ciptaan Allah..
Ajaran Katarisme ini bertentangan sekali dengan ajaran iman Katolik yang diperoleh Petrus di sekolahnya. Di sekolah ia diajarkan tentang pengakuan Iman Para Rasul (Credo) yang antara lain berbunyi: "Aku percaya akan Allah Bapa yang MahaKuasa Pencipta langit dan bumi…" Ajaran iman katolik ini lebih berkesan di hatinya. Kepada keluarnya ia berkata: "Pengetahuanku tentang rahasia-rahasia iman Katolik sangatlah jelas dan dalam, dan keyakinanku akan kebenaran-kebenaran itu sungguh kokoh, sehingga bagiku semuanya itu lebih merupakan sesuatu yang tampak di mataku daripada yang diimani belaka."
Setelah menanjak dewasa, Petrus masuk biara Dominikan. Disana ia menerima pakaian biara dari tangan Santo Dominikus sendiri. Setelah menempuh pendidikan hidup membiara, ia ditabhiskan menjadi imam. Sebagai imam baru, ia ditugaskan berkhotbah di seluruh wilayah Lombardia tentang ajaran iman yang benar. Hal ini menimbulkan kemarahan dan kebencian para penganut Katarisme. Para pengikut aliran sesat itu menyerangnya dengan berbagai tuduhan palsu. Tanpa menyelidiki secara mendalam benar-tidaknya ajaran yang disebarkan Petrus dalam khotbah-khotbahnya, para pembesar masyarakat menegur dan mengecamnya. Menghadapi kecaman-kecaman itu, Petrus tetap bersemangat menjalankan tugasnya sebagai pengkhotbah dan terus berdoa meminta kepada Tuhan agar kiranya ia dapat mati untuk Tuhan, sebagaimana telah diteladankan Yesus dengan mati di salib demi keselamatan manusia, termasuk dirinya. Ia selalu berkata: "Biarkanlah mereka melakukan apa saja atas diriku sesuai rencana mereka. Aku tetap bergembira dan bersemangat karena dengan mati aku akan lebih berpengaruh daripada sekarang."
Doa-doanya untuk mati dalam nama Tuhan terkabulkan, ketika ia dibunuh oleh dua orang Kataris sementara menjalankan tugasnya sebagai pengajar agama. Tetapi justru kematiannya ini membawa banyak berkat bagi orang-orang Kataris. Segera setelah peristiwa pembunuhan atas dirinya, seorang dari pembunuh itu bertobat dan masuk biara Dominikan.
Santo Hugo/ Hugo Agung, Abbas.

Putra bangsawan dari Samur, Prancis ini lahir pada tahun 1024. Ketika berusia 15 tahun, ia masuk biara Benediktin dan menjadi Abbas biara Kluni pada usia 25 tahun. Ketika itu biara Perancis ini mulai kuat pengaruhnya di seluruh Eropa. Banyak biara Kluni didirikan pada masa kepemimpinan Hugo. Aturan-aturan hidup membiara dibuatnya untuk seluruh biara yang dibangunnya.
Kepribadian yang mengagumkan dan kesalehan hidupnya berpengaruh luas baik di kalangan gereja maupun pemerintahan negara. Ia menjadi penasihat bagi sembilan orang Paus, termasuk Sri Paus Gregorius VII (1073-1085) dan banyak pemimpin negara. Ia berusaha keras untuk membaharui cara hidup para imam dan berusaha membebaskan Gereja dari pengawasan negara. Karena semuanya itu, ia dikenal sebagai pencinta dan pencipta perdamaian, dan sebagai sahabat para kusta dan semua orang sakit yang berada di rumah sakit yang didirikannya di Marcigny. Ia meninggal pada tanggal 29 April 1109 dan digelari kudus pada tahun 1120.

First Reading : Acts 4:23‐31

As soon as Peter and John were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priests and elders had said to them. When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God all together. ‘Master,’ they prayed ‘it is you who made heaven and earth and sea, and everything in them; you it is who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Why this arrogance among the nations, these futile plots among the peoples?Kings on earth setting out to war, princes making an alliance, against the Lord and against his Anointed. ‘This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate made an alliance with the pagan nations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, but only to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined should happen. unless a man is born through water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God: what is born of the flesh is flesh; what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above. The wind blows wherever it pleases; you hear its sound,cbut you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. That is how it is with all who are born of the Spirit.’

Words of the Holy Father:

Being a Christian is not only obeying the Commandments: we need to do that, this is true; but if you stop there, you are not a good Christian. Being a good Christian means letting the Spirit enter within you and lead you, lead you where He wants. In our Christian life very often we stop, like Nicodemus, before that “therefore”. We do not know what step to take, we do not know how to do it, and we do not have the trust in God to make this step and let the Spirit enter. Being born again means letting the Spirit enter into us, so that I am led by the Spirit, not by myself, free, with this freedom of the Spirit, and you never know where it will end. Santo Louis Marie Grignon de Monfort, Pengaku Iman.

Santo Louis Grignon lahir di Monfort, Prancis, dari sebuah keluarga miskin pada tahun 1673. Di masa mudanya, ia dikenal lekas marah bila ada sesuatu yang tidak memuaskan hatinya. Namun ketika ia meningkat dewasa, ia mampu mengendalikan sifatnya itu dan berubah menjadi seorang yang penuh pengertian dan rendah hati. Perubahan ini menjadi suatu persiapan yang baik baginya untuk memasuki perjalanan hidup yang panjang sebagai seorang imam.
Pendidikannya yang berlangsung di Paris dirintangi oleh banyak kesulitan, terutama karena kekurangan uang, baik untuk biaya pendidikannya maupun untuk kebutuhan hidupnya sehari-hari. Hidupnya sungguh memprihatinkan. Biliknya sangat sempit, tanpa pemanas ruangan di musim dingin. Untuk memperoleh sedikit uang, ia berusaha bekerja malam di sebuah rumah sakit sebagai penjaga jenazah-jenazah. Namun semua penderitaan yang menimpanya dihadapinya dengan penuh ketabahan demi mencapai cita-citanya yang luhur.
Setelah beberapa tahun berkarya sebagai imam misionaris di dalam negeri dan menjadi pembimbing rohani di sebuah rumah sakit, ia berziarah ke Roma untuk bertemu dengan Sri Paus Klemens XI (1700-1721). Di Roma ia diterima oleh Sri Paus. Melihat karya dan kepribadiannya, Sri Paus memberi gelar "Misionaris Apostolik" kepadanya. Oleh Sri Paus, ia ditugaskan untuk mentobatkan para penganut Yansenisme yang sudah merambat di seluruh Prancis. Tugas suci itu diterimanya dengan senang hati dan dilaksanakannya dengan sangat berhasil.
Di Poiters, ia meletakkan dasar bagi Kongregasi Suster-suster Putri Sapientia, sedangkan di Paris ia menyiapkan Anggaran Dasar bagi tarekat imam-imamnya. Ia menghayati kaul kemiskinan dengan sungguh-sungguh dengan menggantungkan seluruh hidupnya kepada kemurahan hati umatnya. Dua kali ia lepas dari usaha pembunuhan oleh para penganut Yansenisme. Di Indonesia ia dikenal sebagai salah satu pelindung Legio Maria. Ia mendirikan Tarekat Monfortan, yang anggota-anggotanya berkarya juga di Kalimantan Barat. Bertahun-tahun terakhir hidupnya dihabiskannya dengan berdiam di sebuah gua yang sunyi untuk berdoa dan berpuasa hingga menghembuskan nafasnya pada tahun 1716 dalam usia 43 tahun.

Santo Petrus Louis Chanel, Martir.

Santo Petrus Louis Chanel dikenal sebagai misionaris Prancis yang meminta pewartaan Injil di Pulau Futuna, Lautan Teduh. Bersama beberapa misionaris lainnya, ia meninggalkan Prancis pada tahun 1837 menuju Futuna. Sesampainya di Futuna, ia dengan giat mempelajari bahasa dan adat istiadat setempat agar bisa dengan mudah berkomunikasi dengan rakyat setempat. Usahanya ini berhasil menarik perhatian penduduk setempat.
Meskipun demikian, para pemimpin masyarakat tidak menyambut baik, bahkan menentang keras penyebaran iman Kristen diantara penduduk Futuna. Musumusu, salah seorang kepala suku Futuna sangat menentang Petrus. Ia melancarkan aksi penangkapan dan penganiayaan terhadap orang-orang yang mengikuti pelajaran agama pada Petrus. Terhadap Petrus sendiri, ia merencanakan pembunuhan. Untuk maksudnya yang jahat itu, bersama beberapa orang pengawalnya, ia pergi kepada pastor Petrus untuk mengobati kakinya yang luka.
Dengan ramah Petrus menyambut mereka dan mengabulkan permohonannya. Tetapi tiba-tiba mereka menangkap Petrus dan menganiayanya sampai mati. Lalu mereka dengan diam-diam menguburkan Petrus. Pada hemat mereka, kematian Petrus akan mengakhiri semua kegiatan penyebaran iman di Futuna. Tetapi perhitungan itu meleset karena kematian imam yang saleh itu ternyata semakin menyemangati orang-orang serani di seluruh pulau Futuna untuk tetap mempertahankan imannya. Tiga tahun setelah kematian Petrus, seluruh penduduk Futuna telah menjadi Kristen, termasuk Musumusu yang telah membunuh Petrus. Petrus Louis Channel menjadi martir pertama di Kongregasi Persekutuan Santa Perawan Maria dan martir pertama di Pasifik.

First Reading : Acts 5:12‐16

The faithful all used to meet by common consent in the Portico of Solomon. No one else ever dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. So many signs and wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping‐mats in the hope that at least the shadow of Peter might fall across some of them as he went past. People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were cured.

Gospel : John 20:19‐31

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ After saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’ Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe. 'There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.

Words of the Holy Father:

Despite his lack of faith, we should be grateful to Thomas, because he was not content to hear from others that Jesus was alive, or merely to see him in the flesh.  He wanted to see inside, to touch with his hand the Lord’s wounds, the signs of his love.  The Gospel calls Thomas Didymus (v. 24), meaning the Twin, and in this he is truly our twin brother.  Because for us too, it isn’t enough to know that God exists.  A God who is risen but remains distant does not fill our lives; an aloof God does not attract us, however just and holy he may be.  No, we too need to “see God”, to touch him with our hands and to know that he is risen, and risen for us. How can we see him?  Like the disciples: through his wounds. (Homily, 8 April 2018)

Santo Petrus Kanisius, Imam dan Pujangga.
Gereja Petrus Kanisius lahir pada tanggal 8 Mei 1521 di Nijmegen, Belanda. Ketika itu Nijmegen masih termasuk bagian wilayah keuskupan Agung Cologne dan berada di bawah kekuasaan Jerman. Petrus adalah putra tertua dari Yakob Kanis. Yakob Kanis, ayahnya menjabat sebagai Walikota Nijmegen, dan menjadi guru pribadi bagi anak-anak raja dari Lorraine. Semasa hidupnya Petrus menyaksikan pergolakan hebat dalam tubuh Gereja oleh munculnya gerakan Reformasi pimpinan Martin Luther.
Pada umur 14 tahun, Petrus masuk Universitas Cologne dan mencapai gelar Magister (Master of Arts) pada usia 19 tahun. Ia bercita-cita menjadi seorang ahli di bidang hukum. Untuk itu ia melanjutkan studinya di Universitas Louvain. Tetapi kemudian ia berubah haluan. Ia mulai tertarik dengan kehidupan membiara. Ketertarikannya pada kehidupan membiara ini berkaitan erat dengan cara hidup para pertapa di biara Kartusian yang disaksikannya sendiri selama belajar di Cologne. Karena itu, ia kembali ke Cologne untuk belajar Teologi. Di sana ia mengikuti latihan-latihan rohani Santo Ignatius dari Loyola, yang dipimpin oleh Petrus Faber, seorang imam Yesuit yang saleh. Latihan rohani ini sungguh meresap dalam hatinya sehingga Petrus memutuskan untuk menjadi seorang imam Yesuit juga. Niatnya untuk memasuki biara Kartusia dibatalkannya.
Ketika berumur 22 tahun, Petrus memasuki Serikat Yesus. Di Cologne, Petrus turut mendirikan rumah Yesuit pertama, tempat ia menjalani masa novisiatnya. Pada tahun 1546, ia ditabhiskan menjadi imam dan segera terkenal sebagai pengkhotbah ulung. Kardinal Otto Truchess von Waldburg, Uskup Augsburg, memilihnya menjadi teolog pribadinya pada Konsili Trente. Dalam konsili itu, Petrus mendapat kesempatan untuk berbicara, baik di Trente maupun di Bologna. Kemudian ia dipanggil ke Roma oleh Santo Ignatius sendiri, dan pada tahun 1548 ia dikirim untuk mengajar retorik di sekolah Yesuit Pertama di Messina, Sisilia.
Sebagai jawaban terhadap permohonan Raja William IV dari Bavaria, yang membutuhkan professor-professor Katolik untuk melawan ajaran-ajaran bidaah, Paus Paulus III (1543-1549) mengirimkan Petrus dan dua orang imam Yesuit lainnya ke Ingolstadt untuk mengajar di sebuah universitas yang ada disana. Pada tahun 1550, setahun setelah Petrus mengucapkan kaul kekal dalam serikat Yesus, Petrus diangkat menjadi rektor Universitas Ingolstadt. Melalui khotbah-khotbah dan katekasenya, ia berhasil membangkitkan lagi semangat hidup keagamaan di kalangan umat di wilayah itu. Pada tahun 1552, atas permohonan Raja Ferdinand I dari Austria, ia pergi ke Vienna untuk menjalankan misi yang sama. Di Vienna, Raja Ferdinand menawarkan kepadanya jabatan uskup Vienna, tetapi selalu di tolaknya. Pada tahun 1554, atas permohonan Paus Yulius III, Ignatius Loyola mengijinkan Petrus menjadi administrator tahkta Suci yang mengalami kekosongan. Di sini ia menyusun buku katekismusnya yang terkenal: Ringkasan Ajaran Kristen, yang dipakai oleh seluruh Eropa selama beberapa abad sebagai buku pegangan. Kemudian ia menyusun lagi dua buku katekismus yang lebih singkat untuk sekolah-sekolah. Kemudian Petrus diangkat sebagai pemimpin serikat untuk sebuah wilayah kerja Yesuit yang meliputi Jerman Selatan, Autria, dan Bohemia. Dalam masa kepemimpinannya, ia membuka sebuah kolose di Munich dan Praha dan bertanggungjawab atas pembaharuan sekolah-sekolah di Augsburg. Pada tahun 1562, ia mendirikan sebuah kolose di Insbruck dan mengambil bagian sebagai pembicara dalam Konsili Trente sebagai Teolog KePausan.
Setelah menyelesaikan masa jabatannya sebagai pemimpin serikat, ia mengajar di Universitas Dellingen, Bavaria. Disini ia giat menulis suatu seri buku sebagai tanggapan terhadap sebuah buku yang diterbitkan sekelompok penulis Protestan dari Magdeburg. Karyanya yang terakhir di selesaikan di Frieburg, Switzerland, tempat ia mendirikan sebuah universitas dan membantu menbangun sebuah pernerbitan Katolik pada tahun 1580. Pada tahun 1591 ia jatuh sakit tetapi terus menulis hingga kematiannya pada tanggal 21 Desember 1597 di Frieburg. Oleh Sri Paus Pius XI (1922-1939) Petrus digelar sebagai seorang Pujangga Gereja yang masyur.

Santa Zita, Pengaku Iman.

Santa Zita di lahirkan di Monte Sagrati, Italia Tengah pada tahun 1218. Pada umur 12 tahun ia menjadi pelayan / pembantu rumah pada keluarga Pagano Di Fatinelli, seorang pengusaha tekstil yang kaya. Zita juga bekerja di pabrik orangtuanya, sebagai buruh, ia memperlihatkan perilaku yang saleh dan murah hati. Hal ini menimbulkan amarah dari pelayan-pelayan yang lain. Selain itu, ia pun dimarahi oleh orangtuanya karena mengambil sejumlah besar makanan dan pakaian untuk dibagi-bagikan kapada para miskin. Namun keluarga Fatinelli memahami maksud Zita dan turut menambahkan bantuan kepadanya untuk melanjutkan karya-karya cinta kasih.
Setelah beberapa tahun, ia dibiarkan membantu anak-anak dan menjadi pengurus rumah tangga Fatinelli. Dalam tahun-tahun terakhir hidupnya, keluarga Fatinelli membebaskan dia dari tugas-tugas rumah dan membiarkan dia mengunjungi orang-orang sakit dan para tawanan di penjara. Setelah kematiannya, jenazahnya di kuburkan di gereja Santo Frediano di Lucca. Ia meninggal pada tanggal 27 April 1278 di Lucca, dekat tempat kelahirannya. Pada tahun 1696, ia digelari "kudus" oleh Sri Paus Innocentio XII (1691-1700).

Santa Lydia Longley, Pengaku Iman

Santa Lydia Longley lahir pada tahun 1674 di Groton, sebuah daerah koloni Inggris di Amerika Serikat. Keluarga Longley penganut agama Protestan Puritan, yang keras sekali pandangan hidupnya. Ibunya meninggal dunia ketiak Lydia bersama tiga orang adiknya: Will, Jemina dan John masih kecil. Dalam usia remajanya, Lydia terpaksa menggantikan ibunya dalam mengurusi adik-adiknya. Hal ini dilakukannya sampai saat ayahnya William Longley menikah lagi dengan Crips Deliverance, seorang janda muda. Semenjak itu, Crips mengambil ahli lagi tugas-tugas Lydia sebagai ibu rumah tangga.
Dari perkawinan kedua ini, William memperoleh lagi empat orang anak: Yosef, Betty, Richard dan Mathaniel. William mendidik anak-anaknya penuh disiplin bahkan keras. Mereka dilatih untuk bekerja, berdoa dan menulis. Lydia dibebani tugas mendampingi adik-adiknya dalam melaksanakan tugas-tugas itu. Setiap minggu mereka bersama orang Kristen lainnya, dan mendengarkan khotbah pendeta Hobart. Selain itu, Willliam melatih anak-anaknya menggunakan senjata untuk membela diri bila ada suatu bahaya. Bahaya besar yang selalu mengancam hidup mereka ialah serangan orang-orang Indian yang masih biadab. Pada tahun 1694, daerah Groton diserang oleh orang-orang Indian Abenaki. Ayah dan ibunya bersama beberapa orang lainnya mati terbunuh dalam peristiwa itu. Tinggallah Lydia, Betty dan John dibiarkan hidup oleh orang-orang Indian itu. Mereka dibawa sebagai tawanan ke New France, daerah koloni Prancis. Di tengah perjalanan itu, Betty meninggal dunia dan John dipisahkan dari Lydia.
Setibanya di New France, Lydia dihadapkan ke depan penguasa Prancis setempat. Disana hadir juga tuan Le Ber, seorang duda yang beragama Katolik. Oleh Tuan Le Ber, Lydia ditebus dan diangkat menjadi anaknya sendiri. Semenjak itu, kehidupan Lydia tergantung sepenuhnya pada kebaikan hati Le Ber dan anak-anaknya Pierre dan Jeanne. Ia merasa senang karena diperlakukan sebagai anak kandung dengan cara hidup Katolik dari keluarga Le Ber, maupun dari segenap warga kota New France. Lydia kemudian berkenalan dengan Pastor Pere Meriel, imam di New Frence dan suster-suster Notre Dame. Atas pemintaan Tuan Le Ber, seorang suster datang mengajarkan bahasa Prancis kepada Lydia. Pada suatu hari, Lydia diperkenalkan pada suster Mere Bourgooys, pendiri kongregasi tersebut. Pertemuannya dengan suster Mere Bourgooys menumbuhkan dalam hatinya keinginan untuk menjadi suster juga.
Atas pengaruh keluarga Le Ber, suster-suster dan pastor Meriel, Lydia kemudian dipermandikan menjadi Katolik pada tanggal 24 April 1696 dengan nama Magdalena. Kemudian ia diterima menjadi suster dengan nama suster Magdalena. Pada tanggal 19 September 1699, ia mengikrarkan kaul kekal. Setelah bertugas di New France selama beberapa tahun, Lydia dikirim ke pulau Orleans untuk menjadi superior biara Keluarga Kudus disana. Ia meninggal dunia pada tanggal 21 Juni 1758 dan dimakamkan di kapela Kanak-Kanak Yesus di Montreal.

First Reading : Acts 4:13‐21

The rulers, elders and scribes were astonished at the assurance shown by Peter and John, considering they were uneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus; but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer. So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion. ‘What are we going to do with these men?’ they asked. ‘It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that a miracle has been worked through them in public, and we cannot deny it. But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us caution them never to speak to anyone in this name again.’ So they called them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John retorted, ‘You must judge whether in God’s eyes it is right to listen to you and not to God. We cannot promise to stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.’ The court repeated the warnings and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them, since all the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.

Gospel : Mark 16:9‐15

Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him. After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either. Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.’

Words of the Holy Father:

In the Gospel (…) there is the sending forth by the Lord. The Lord reveals Himself as Saviour, as the only Son of God; He revealed Himself to all Israel, all the people, especially and with more details to the apostles, to the disciples. (…) when He appeared to the eleven, He said to them: “Go into the whole world; proclaim the Good News to every creature” (Mk 16:15). This is the missionary dimension of faith. Either faith has a missionary dimension, or it is not faith. Faith is not something only for myself, so that I may grow with faith: this is a gnostic heresy. Faith always leads you to come out of yourself, to go out. The transmission of faith; faith must be transmitted, it must be offered, above all by witness: “Go, so that the people see how you live” (see v. 15). (…) But where is the certainty? How can we be sure that by going out of ourselves we will be fruitful in the transmission of the faith? “Proclaim the Good News to every creature” (Mk 16:15) and you will work wonders (see vv. 17-18). And the Lord will be with us until the end of the world. In the transmission of ideologies there are teachers but when I act out of faith, the Lord accompanies me. Santo Kletus dan Marselinus, Paus dan Martir.

Selama beberapa abad lamanya, nama Anakletus dan Kletus dianggap orang sebagai dua orang Paus yang berbeda. Tetapi sekarang kedua nama itu dianggap sebagai nama dari satu orang. Menurut daftar resmi para Paus yang dikeluarkan oleh Tahkta Suci, Paus Anakletus (Kletus) memimpin gereja dari tahun 76 sampai tahun 88.
Ahli-ahli sejarah Gereja, mengikuti daftar nama Paus yang diterbitkan oleh santo Irenius dari Lyons, menyamakan Paus Anakletus dengan Kletus. Eusebius dalam bukunya "Sejarah Gereja" menyatakan, bahwa Linus, Uskup Roma, setelah memimpin selama 12 tahun, mengalihkan kepemimpinannya itu kepada Kletus. Dalam doa bagi para Kudus dalam perayaan Ekaristi, setelah menyebutkan nama Santo Petrus dan Paulus serta para rasul lainnya, imam menyebutkan nama Linus dan Kletus. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa Anakletus pengganti Santo Petrus, ditetapkan sebagai Paus selama masa yang kurang damai dan aman di dalam gereja, menyusul masa penganiyaan oleh raja Nero, yang berlangsung dari tahun 64 sampai 68.
Sangat sedikit informasi yang didapat tentang riwayat hidup Anakletus. Ia membagi kota Roma dalam 25 buah paroki. Ia membangun dan menghiasi kapela di jalan Ostian sebagai penghormatan kepada Santo Paulus dan membangun sebuah kapela yang sama di atas kuburan santo Petrus di Vatikan. Buku para Paus (Liber Pontificalis) menyebutkan bahwa Anakletus dikuburkan di suatu tempat dekat kuburan Santo Petrus.
Anakletus mati sebagai martir dalam masa penganiayaan kaisar Domitianus II (81-96). Buku misa Romawi mendaftarkan hari pestanya bersama-sama dengan Marselianus, yang juga seorang Paus. Marselianus dikenal sebagai Paus yang baik hati dan penuh kasih kepada umat. Banyak sekali orang kristen yang telah menyangkal imannya pada masa penganiayaan diterimanya kembali ke pangkuan Gereja, asal saja mereka sungguh-sungguh bertobat dan bersedia menjalankan tapa untuk menghapus dosa-dosa mereka. Kebaikan hatinya ini membuat banyak orang mengkritik dan menfitnahnya. Akhirnya ia sendiri mati dianiaya karena Kristus pada tahun 309.

Kis 4:13 Ketika sidang itu melihat keberanian Petrus dan Yohanes dan mengetahui, bahwa keduanya orang biasa yang tidak terpelajar, heranlah mereka; dan mereka mengenal keduanya sebagai pengikut Yesus.
Kis 4:14 Tetapi karena mereka melihat orang yang disembuhkan itu berdiri di samping kedua rasul itu, mereka tidak dapat mengatakan apa-apa untuk membantahnya.
Kis 4:15 Dan setelah mereka menyuruh rasul-rasul itu meninggalkan ruang sidang, berundinglah mereka,
Kis 4:16 dan berkata: "Tindakan apakah yang harus kita ambil terhadap orang-orang ini? Sebab telah nyata kepada semua penduduk Yerusalem, bahwa mereka telah mengadakan suatu mujizat yang menyolok dan kita tidak dapat menyangkalnya.

Kis 4:19 Tetapi Petrus dan Yohanes menjawab mereka: "Silakan kamu putuskan sendiri manakah yang benar di hadapan Allah: taat kepada kamu atau taat kepada Allah.
Kis 4:20 Sebab tidak mungkin bagi kami untuk tidak berkata-kata tentang apa yang telah kami lihat dan yang telah kami dengar."
Kis 4:21 Mereka semakin keras mengancam rasul-rasul itu, tetapi akhirnya melepaskan mereka juga, sebab sidang tidak melihat jalan untuk menghukum mereka karena takut akan orang banyak yang memuliakan nama Allah berhubung dengan apa yang telah terjadi.
Mzm 118:1 Bersyukurlah kepada TUHAN, sebab Ia baik! Bahwasanya untuk selama-lamanya kasih setia-Nya.

Today bring to Me ALL MANKIND, ESPECIALLY ALL SINNERS, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of souls plunges Me.

Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart, and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by Your love which unites You to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially upon poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen.

Today bring to Me THE SOULS OF PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS, and immerse them in My unfathomable mercy. It was they who gave Me strength to endure My bitter Passion. Through them as through channels My mercy flows out upon mankind.

Most Merciful Jesus, from whom comes all that is good, increase Your grace in men and women consecrated to Your service, that they may perform worthy works of mercy; and that all who see them may glorify the Father of Mercy who is in heaven.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the company of chosen ones in Your vineyard—upon the souls of priests and religious; and endow them with the strength of Your blessing. For the love of the Heart of Your Son in which they are enfolded, impart to them Your power and light, that they may be able to guide others in the way of salvation and with one voice sing praise to Your boundless mercy for ages without end. Today bring to Me ALL DEVOUT AND FAITHFUL SOULS, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. The souls brought Me consolation on the Way of the Cross. They were that drop of consolation in the midst of an ocean of bitterness.

Most Merciful Jesus, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this grace of You by that most wonderous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Saint Anselm

St. Anselm was born in 1033 into the noble Lombard family in Aosta, Italy. His mother, Ermenberga, was a pious woman, but after her death, his father's violence and harshness led Anselm to flee home. After several years of wandering in France, he took the Benedictine habit in 1060 at Bec, France. Anselm's learning and expertise were exceptional, and within a span of three years, he was made Prior and, after another 15 years, despite his reluctance, Abbot. 

During his days at Bec, Anselm wrote his well-known philosophical and theological works on the existence and nature of God, the Monologium and the Proslogium. Under his leadership, the Abbey of Bec became a monastic school, influential in philosophical and theological studies. Anselm's holiness and prudence as Abbot earned him widespread recognition and admiration, leading to his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093. His care and concern extended to the very poorest people. Anselm's staunch opposition to the slave trade resulted in a significant achievement: he successfully obtained a resolution from the national council at Westminster prohibiting the sale of human beings. 

King William refused to cooperate with Anselm's efforts to reform the Church. Anselm's insistence on the Church's self-governance, against the state's claims to its administration and property, caused him to be exiled from England. Though personally a mild and gentle man and a lover of peace, he would not back off from conflict and persecution when the rights of the Church were at stake. Anselm was successful in his struggle and returned to his archdiocese in 1106. Anselm died at Canterbury on 21 April 1109. The influence of St. Anselm on the subsequent course of theology led Pope Clement XI to name him a Doctor of the Church in 1720. 

St. Anselm, you dedicated your life to seeking and teaching the depths of divine wisdom; obtain for us the grace to spread the good news with love and conviction.

Today bring to Me The PAGANS AND THOSE WHO DO NOT YET KNOW ME. I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy.

Most compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Saint Abdiesus also known as Hebed Jesus

Saint Abdiesus, also known as Hebed Jesus, is a revered figure in early Christian history, particularly within the context of the Persian Christian community. He was a deacon renowned for his steadfast faith amidst intense persecution under King Shapur II in the 4th century. Abdiesus exemplified a life committed to the service of God and His Church, dedicating himself to the spiritual needs of his fellow Christians.

During a period marked by rampant hostility towards Christians, Abdiesus remained a beacon of hope and resilience. According to historical accounts, he was not alone in his suffering; he was accompanied by a group of fellow martyrs, including Abrosimus, Acepsimus, and Azadanes, among others. This collective suffering highlights the communal aspect of faith during perilous times, where believers stood firm together against oppressive forces.

Among those who shared Abdiesus's fate was Tarbula, the sister of Saint Simeon, who endured a particularly brutal martyrdom by sawing. This detail underscores the harsh realities faced by early Christians in a society that often viewed their faith as a threat.

St. Abdiesus's legacy is one of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. His life serves as a reminder of the strength found in community and the profound impact of steadfast faith in the face of adversity. His story continues to inspire many believers today, encouraging a spirit of fervour in their faith journeys, echoing St. Paul's teaching that "to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

PRAYER:

O God, who were pleased to give light to your Church by adorning St. Abdiesus with the victory of martyrdom, graciously grant that, as he imitated the Lord's Passion, so we may, by following in his footsteps, be worthy to attain eternal joys. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to unity with the Church, My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion.

Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son's Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Saint George

St. George was born to noble Christian parents in Cappadocia, modern-day Turkey. When his father died, he and his mother moved to Lydda, Palestine, where his mother had been born and where she inherited a large estate. George eventually joined the army of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, where he advanced to the rank of colonel. In 303, Diocletian issued an edict with the aim of eradicating Christians across the empire. Churches were to be destroyed, Scripture burned, public worship was forbidden, and Christians, especially those in the military, were forced to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods. Those who refused faced imprisonment or death. 

George tore up the Emperor's order against Christians. This infuriated Diocletian, and George was imprisoned and tortured, but he refused to deny his faith. The Emperor then tried to entice George with promises of favors if he worshipped the Roman gods. In response to these promises, George told his jailer, "I despise your promises and do not fear your threats. The Emperor's power is of short duration, and his reign will soon end. It is better for you, to acknowledge the true God and to seek His kingdom." The following day, George was led through the city and then beheaded. His witness was so powerful that many Roman pagans were converted, including Diocletian's wife, who was also martyred for her faith. 

According to the 'Golden Legend,' George rescues a Libyan king's daughter from a dragon and then slays the monster in return for a promise by the king's subjects to be baptized. Some have interpreted the dragon in the story as the devil and have seen Saint George's slaying of the dragon as an indication of the power of his intercession. St. George is the patron saint of agricultural workers, soldiers, peacekeeping missions, shepherds, scouting, England, and many other countries.                                                                                                          

St. George, we implore your mighty aid in the battle against all that is evil; secure for us the grace to triumph over the temptations that besiege us and to courageously endure the trials that burden us, so that we may walk in the path of righteousness and attain the eternal rewards of our faith.

Divine Mercy Novena Day 6

Today bring to Me THE MEEK AND HUMBLE SOULS AND THE SOULS OF LITTLE CHILDREN, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls most closely resemble My Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as earthly Angels, who will keep vigil at My altars. I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. Only the humble soul is capable of receiving My grace. I favor humble souls with My confidence.

Most Merciful Jesus, You yourself have said, "Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart." Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy and they are the heavenly Father's favorites. They are a sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God Himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon meek souls, upon humble souls, and upon little children who are enfolded in the abode which is the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls bear the closest resemblance to Your Son. Their fragrance rises from the earth and reaches Your very throne. Father of mercy and of all goodness, I beg You by the love You bear these souls and by the delight You take in them: Bless the whole world, that all souls together may sing out the praises of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Saint Fidelis

St. Fidelis was born in 1576 in the town of Sigmaringen, southwestern Germany, where his father was mayor. He practiced law for some six years and, famed for his scrupulous honesty and life of mortification, made himself a name as the sympathetic "advocate of the poor." But the law courts then were so corrupt that at 34, he abandoned his profession in favor of the priesthood, and then, having sold all his possessions for the benefit of the poor, he joined the Capuchins at Freiburg in the Black Forest, taking the name of Fidelis, on 4 October 1612. 

Fidelis' burning zeal was directed especially towards the conversion of those who had fallen prey to Calvinism and Zwinglianism, and to achieve this objective, he used not only his oratorical skills in the pulpit but also wrote numerous anonymous pamphlets. In 1621, he was directed by Papal Nuncio to reform a Benedictine monastery at Pfaefers, and his superiors sent him to do missionary work among the Zwinglians in the Swiss Canton of the Grisons. He accomplished both tasks with such astonishing success that, in 1622, Pope Gregory XV, through the newly founded Congregation of the Propaganda in Rome, made him head of the Grisons missions. 

St. Fidelis traveled through the Alps in absolute poverty, depending solely upon God's Providence for his daily needs and armed only with his Crucifix, Bible, Breviary, and the book of the Capuchin rule. He would often preach and catechize several times during the day in the churches or open squares, perfectly oblivious to the threats and insults to which the infuriated Protestants subjected him. At times, he focused his attention on the city magistrates in lengthy conferences, and the conversion of the most influential citizens would then bring about numerous other conversions. The Protestant ministers became seriously alarmed over his successes and roused the populace by imputing political motives to his mission. On 24 April 1622, Fidelis was forcibly removed from the pulpit by a hostile crowd. Even though he was pressured to give up his faith and convert to Protestantism, he adamantly refused, which led to his brutal murder. The first martyr of the Capuchin Order and of the Propagation of the Faith, Fidelis, was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV on 20 June 1746.

 

St. Fidelis, pray for an increase in our faith and zeal that we may more earnestly desire the salvation of all people.

Today bring to Me THE SOULS WHO ESPECIALLY VENERATE AND GLORIFY MY MERCY, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death.

Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself, receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your mercy. These souls are mighty with the very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident of Your mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate Your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy, and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God:

Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He, Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen.
